Palestine-born director offers a different perspective on the Palestinian cause

Born in Palestine, director Nawras Ebu Saleh wants to show the humanitarian side of the Palestine cause instead of showing stone-throwing children, bombs and soldiers with guns. Having screened his film in Gaza and Jordan, the director wants to promote his film in Turkey as well

Nawras Ebu Saleh, a Palestinian filmmaker who is currently living in Amman, the capital city of Jordan, has released his new film ''Oversized Coat," which has attracted great interest in Jordan. The film was also screened in the occupied West Bank, the besieged Gaza Strip, Jerusalem and Tel Aviv. We talked to Saleh about his new film and the obstacles he faced for seven years while producing his film, as well as his future plans.DS: Can you tell us about you, who are you?Nawras Ebu Saleh: I am a Palestinian filmmaker who began working in 2007. In 2011, I attended the Cannes Film Festival with my short movie ''Hudna'' (Truce). Currently, my two-hour-long feature film ''Oversized Coat" is being screened in theaters mostly in the Middle East. There is another documentary film of mine titled ''Leyletu's Suqut'' that is 24 minutes long. The documentary talks about the fall of the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad. I plan to write as many human stories as possible to address humanitarian issues. I always say that no one will make our films, only we can, because in order to be more real and true, we have to express our issue – no one else can.DS: How did you decide to make "Oversized Coat?" What was your motivation?NAS: When I arrived at the Cannes Film Festival, I started to look at the films and the directors around me differently; something changed for me. I realized that I should write and produce a film that is not weak and simple. I then wrote the script for ''Oversized Coat."DS: How did you fund your film?I launched a campaign titled ''One Hundred Cinema'' to fund my film. My objective was to find Palestinian people or people sympathetic to the Palestinian cause who wanted to support the Palestine issue by funding "Oversized Coat." The campaign was the main funding source. At the end, I managed to reach out to 77 businessmen and each of them donated $ 1,000 to produce my film.DS: What is the message that you wanted to deliver with "Oversized Coat?"I wanted to impart a humanitarian message, especially from the Palestinian side. We, the Palestinians, are always pictured negatively in the media, as people hiding behind the walls. The Palestinians "do" love and hate, get sad and happy; they have lives. I integrated all these details into the film in order to show the human side of the Palestinian cause. I thought that the Palestinian cause might reach more people in the world if I manage to show the human side of the Palestinians.DS: Can you tell us more about "Oversized Coat?"In Palestinian culture, wearing an oversized coat means assuming big responsibilities, even bigger than the man himself who wears the coat. The hero of the film always wants to wear his father's coat when he is a small child. The film suggests that if someone wants to take responsibility for his or her country or any other humanitarian issue, he or she has to wear the coat. That is why the coat is used in the beginning and in the end of the film. The hero of the film always dreams of wearing the coat. DS: Are there any similarities between your life and the life of the film's protagonist?Yes of course. The film is shaped around my personal experiences. I wanted to show what I have lived throughout my life in the film. There are other stories of my friends and other people that I included in the hero's story. As you know, in cinema we need a hero to share our stories and make him or her carry the responsibility. Hence, the film is a reflection of my life, but I hope that I do not end up like the hero of my film in the future (laughs).DS: Did you face any difficulties while filming "Oversized Coat?"Yes, I faced many difficulties and obstacles. The first obstacle was funding the film. I worked hard to raise the money to produce the film. The second obstacle was making people believe. People do not believe in cinema anymore. Moreover, people had second thoughts on donating money to produce the film. Not everybody appreciates cinema and its value or understands its effect in delivering a certain message.DS: What is your plan for the future?I think we should have a strategy to make more films like this. I dream about a Hollywood of our own where we can produce films and share our own ideas.DS: What do you want to tell the people who will go and watch your film? What would you like to say to your audience?I want to say that I tried to mirror the experiences of the Palestinian people. I want people to see things from our perspective. The most beautiful thing for a filmmaker is to see his or her audience with smiles on their face or tears in their eyes. It would be the most amazing thing for me. I want people to pay attention to all the details in the film and not to set aside any existing prejudices while watching it.I want to say that I tried to mirror the experiences of the Palestinian people. Is the film only available for people in Jordan or Palestine? We are promoting the film around the world. We are mostly focused on Jordan and Palestine. The Palestinians who want to become a part of the promotion of the film can hold press conferences and panel sessions for the film at universities and various other venues in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. We are also promoting the film in other Arab and Islamic countries. The film premiered in Malaysia, and we plan to organize premieres in Turkey, Tunisia and Qatar as well.
