Pera Film will present a selection of Bosnian director Jasmila Zbanic's films as part of Bosnia Sancak Culture Days between Oct. 18 and Oct. 23. Last year, Pera Film offered a platform for promising and world-renowned directors of Bosnia-Herzegovina cinema with its program entitled "Sarajevo Now!" which also shed light on the extensive culture and history of the country. The program, titled "Poetry of Reality: Jasmila Zbanic," focuses on five films from the director, who won the Golden Bear Award at the 56th Berlin International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Award of the American Film Institute with her film "Esma's Secret."Zbanic graduated from the Department of Film and Stage Direction of the Sarajevo Academy of Performing Arts in 1996, attending Professor Lew Hunter's screenwriting workshop and Professor Lee de Long's puppet workshop at the Imaginary Academy Groznan the following year. The cinema of Bosnia-Herzegovina has been regarded since the 1970s as a school of its own, and Jasmila Zbanic, who is one of it's directors and who has been receiving critical attention at almost every international festival, says the characters in her films are not "black and white," since real people are not that simple. Instead of choosing the easy way and creating characters that can be called heroes or saints, she is interested in narrating the stories of the weak through brave and tolerant characters.As a part of the program, Zbanic's films "One Day in Sarajevo" (2015), "On the Path" (2010), "Esma's Secret" (2006), "For Those Who Can Tell No Tales" (2013) and "Love Island" (2014) will be screened for movie buffs. Moreover, the audience will have a chance to sit together with Zbanic following the screening of "Love Island" on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. The talk will be in English with simultaneous Turkish translation and participation is free of charge.
