Kazakhstan hosts Turkish film festival


Organized by the Culture and Tourism Ministry and the Yerli Düşünce Foundation with contributions made by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA), the Turkish Embassy to Kazakhstan and the Yunus Emre Turkic Cultural Center, the venue Turkish Film Week commenced Sunday in the Kazakhstani capital of Astana.

The film festival, hosted at the Jastar Theater Hall and overseen by the president's Chief Advisor Yalçın Topçu, Justice and Development Party (AK Party) deputy and President of the Yerli Düşünce Foundation Mehmet Gündoğdu, Turkish ambassador to Kazakhstan Nevzat Uyanık and TİKA Coordinator of Astana Ali İhsan Çağlar.

After the playing of the Turkish and Kazakh national anthems, audience members watched the screening of a brief film about the July 15 bloody coup attempt.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency (AA), Chief Advisor Topçu said he believes that the importance of adopting a universal language and a single concept in film production is paramount to success, saying, "My dream is to debut all Turkish films in Turkic countries around the world so that all Turkmen, Kyrgyz, Uzbek and Anatolian Turks learn about their lives and lifestyles." Topçu further added that the filmmaker might collaborate in scriptwriting for Köroğlu, the Epic of Manas and the Orkhon inscriptions.

On the other hand, Turkish Ambassador to Astana Uyanık said that the event is organized to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Kazakhstan's independence, saying: "This event is organized in order to contribute to the strengthening of cultural, social and artistic ties between two countries. This selection of Turkish films will allow the Kazak people to learn more about life in Anatolia and the lifestyles of the Turkish people."

AK Party deputy and President of the Yerli Düşünce Foundation Gündoğdu stated that Turkish actors and directors flew to Astana to attend Turkish Film Week noting, "God willing, we will make collaborations in the area of cinema. I hope that we will be able to bring Kazakh films to the Anatolian audience in a similar event," said Gündoğdu.

TİKA'S Astana Coordinator Çağlar said that art is the best tool for improving relations between two countries and for creating the necessary environment for nations to get to know each other better adding, "As TİKA, we are aware of the power of art. Hence, we are supporting Turkish Film Week which is initiated by the Culture and Tourism Ministry." Çağlar further said that they are planning to organize the venue in other Turkic countries such as Turkmenistan and will continue to support any project that enables sister countries to learn more about Turkish history and culture.

Turkish Film Week in Astana will continue until Dec. 22. Turkey's 2017 Academy Award entry "Kalandar Soğuğu" (The Cold of Kalandar) as well as "Ertuğrul," "Üç Göl" (Three Lakes), "Unutursam Fısılda" (Whisper If I Forget) and "Patron Mutlu Son İstiyor" (Boss Demands A Happy Ending) will be screened at the festival.
