Despite DAESH, it is time to embrace differences

DAESH is targeting European values and serves the interests of circles with discriminatory, racist and xenophobic views with its actions

DAESH continues hitting several countries with terrorist attacks. We have to admit it is hard to understand why exactly it is targeting Europe, or at least, harder than understanding why it is attacking Turkey. One can easily imagine that the group is targeting Turkey to keep it away from the Syrian civil war and, indirectly, to make sure that Bashar Assad's regime remains in power.DAESH attacked Paris twice last year, and in order to explain why, many analysts have pointed to France's position on the Syria. It is a fact that since the beginning of the Syrian crisis, Paris had adopted a clear anti-Assad position, just like Turkey, so that is the reason why it has been punished. Of course, one may ask what France had achieved exactly with its anti-Assad policy. We know that successive French governments did not do anything too concrete to help the rebels oust Assad, and as soon as the international climate changed, France modified its stance and adopted a softer position regarding Assad. Still, DAESH has attacked France, and most people have considered it a message concerning the country's Syria policy. It had already been revealed that the Paris attackers had some links with radical cells in Belgium, so it is was almost obvious the same network would do something in Belgium, too. DAESH, and naturally, the minds behind it, were probably planning the Belgium attacks since some time ago.The presence of a terrorist network traveling freely between France and Belgium was a quite disturbing fact for the governments of both countries to hear. The public has noticed there are serious problems concerning the extradition of terrorists and sharing of intelligence. Problems exist not only between France and Belgium, but with many other countries such as the Netherlands and Turkey. By the way, the Schengen Agreement has suffered a lot because of the overall security situation. Europeans were getting used to open borders, at least within EU borders, but now they are thinking about ways to shut their doors to their immediate neighbors. Therefore, we cannot say that DAESH's purpose is simply to keep Turkey or France away from Syria. One of the purposes is to provoke fear and suspicion among EU countries and make people think that European integration is an impossible dream. It is as if DAESH's long-term objective is the EU's disintegration. It is not easy to know for sure if this is really what DAESH expects. What is certain, however, is that these attacks are disrupting relations between EU members, slowing down European integration and harming Europe's common values.Public liberties are being limited constantly because of the anti-terrorist measures. It is about the old debate on the balance between security and freedoms. Governments discuss new and harder measures, which are criticized by human rights defenders, in Turkey as well as in Europe. With its actions, DAESH is targeting European values and serves the interests of circles with discriminatory, racist and xenophobic views. Anti-Muslim sentiments were already strong in the Western world since the 9/11 attacks, and now DAESH, with its actions and propaganda, is strengthening those feelings. Unfortunately, few people in the West notice that it is Muslims who suffer the most from the actions carried out by organizations like DAESH.The present atmosphere will undoubtedly reinforce xenophobia in European countries and make ordinary people grow suspicious about differences. DAESH is pushing the world toward "Trumpization," and this is the biggest threat we face. It is high time to make the differences embrace each other before it is too late.
