The HDP's 'mild' opposition

Groups on the left in Turkey have recently been suffering from feelings of surprise and anger although they do not clearly display it since their hopes are not completely shattered. Their dream was for the Kurdish movement to lead the left and occupy every political position in this sphere. Thus Turkey's left, which has not been able to create an effectual policy so far, would find a position for itself on the political scene. Actually, it was the Kurdish movement's imprisoned leader Abdullah Öcalan's project. And the formation of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and the Peace and Democracy Party's (BDP) joining the HDP were also a part of that project. However, there is a distinct difference in the attitude of Kurdish politicians in the aftermath of the presidential election, and groups on the left are concerned about that.Apparently, the Kurdish political movement is ready to collaborate with the government in the reconstruction of Turkey and the Middle East while maintaining its opposition to the Justice and Development Party (AK Party). One should admit that this is a quite pragmatic attitude. Within the chaos of the Middle East, future stability will probably be provided by Turkey, Kurdish areas, and Iran. This will not imply a new order with coherence in all of its aspects - tensions and negotiations between the parties will continue. But the power groups with the ability to create stability will have a voice in the region and be one step ahead of the other countries in the determination of the region's future. The interesting point is that Turkey and Iran, eternal rivals in other words, both need Kurds in their countries. Kurds will be a state-like agent at the moment when they clear up their inner problems and produce a "culture of living together." This picture invites the HDP administration to adopt a more inclusive, long-term, and realistic policy.HDP Chairman Selahattin Demirtaş's loudly applauding Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during his inauguration ceremony is one of the signifiers implying the new Kurdish politics we will observe in the following period. Groups on the left disapproved of Demirtaş and it was said on social media that he was an AK Party supporter. Demirtaş answered them by saying that the person elected president with 51.8 percent of the vote has the majority of the electorate at his back and he applauded him as a sign of the respect toward it. He also added a remark that could be hardly understood by the Republican People's Party (CHP): "The AK Party can only be thrown by applauding." This is quite true since the good deeds of the AK Party are much more than its faults. If you ignore the good deeds and the backgrounds of the faults, no one would take any notice of your criticism. If the issue had remained only a matter of applauding it might not have become that critical. But the PKK senior member Cemil Bayık announced during the same week that the HDP must save itself from marginal groups. And then it became apparent to whom he was referring: the orthodox leftists within the HDP. Also, Sırrı Süreyya Önder, the leader of the delegation visiting Öcalan, said in a TV interview that the AK Party sincerely wishes for a resolution. He also pointed that the framework law enacted by the government for the reconciliation process is a contract consistent with the wishes of both parties. In brief, incidents sufficient to lead leftist groups to depression were experienced successively in just one week. Leftist media outlets and intellectuals have observed that the HDP is shifting toward a position of "mild" opposition and they are afraid to completely lose control of political autonomy. Those who inculcated Kurds to fight again only a year ago are now on the brink of blaming them for treason. However, the returning of politics in its real sense to Turkey after the opposition's nonsensical behavior for the last 12 years may be thanks to this new approach by the HDP.The thing considered by the CHP as a radical approach is actually a lack of politics, while the approach of the HDP that is assumed to be mild is actually politics itself. But it is not realistic to expect Turkey's left to comprehend it just yet.
