Je suis un Charlie ‘responsable’

The Charlie Hebdo massacre was a shocking surprise for most of us. Unfortunately, it was also a development which, since the moment it happened, is not surprising in the least. To put it simply, you can neither prevent the globalization of a certain effect you create in a globalized world, nor in turn, prevent the reaction taking place within a global framework. It is possible to find out why the Charlie Hebdo magazine was targeted, by looking at the Islamic world's experiences as well as the periodical's way of presenting itself. The Islamic world remembers the situation hundred years ago and sees the pain it is undergoing as a consequence of the opportunist and manipulative politics of the West. Add to that picture the fatal mistakes committed in Afghanistan and Iraq in the recent past, and the trauma caused by the killing of thousands of innocent people. And please do not forget the tolerance shown to al-Assad in Syria and the explicit support given to the coup in Egypt. When seen from a Muslim's point of view, the Islamic world is confronted by a hypocritical West - a West which insists on the discourse of peace, but does not refrain from ruining the worlds of those who do not resemble them; a West that respects democracy, but sees nothing wrong in supporting coups and authoritarian regimes for the sake of "stability."But the problem does not end here, because this West cannot manage to live with Muslim foreigners (in particular) in its own world, and the number of those inclining toward racism is rapidly increasing. Today, in most European countries, racist parties receive the highest number of votes. The Western media is gradually and willingly moving away from objectivity, while broadcasting news items that discredit Islam and Muslims. For two young French Muslims living in a globalized world, it was not difficult to become politicized and develop a radical sensitivity at an early age. The ill-treatment those people face while struggling to leave their small ghettos may encourage them to take shelter in a psychological sense, in certain "macro issues" of the globalized world. And the networks promoting violence already exist to entrap such people. Consequently, thousands of Western Muslims who are EU citizens today live as potential subjects or objects of violence. And Europe is still waiting for the day when all other nations will become "civilized" and resemble it.However, this expectation is not realistic at all, and the reason is the West itself. Charlie Hebdo was a typical and symbolic magazine in this sense. Regarding the reactions against all religions and all kinds of faith within freedom of expression can be comforting. But there is a crucial distinction between the religion of the "Others" and the indigenous cultural religion. In the Christian world, it is culturally possible for devout individuals and atheists to live together in harmony. But since there is no common cultural ground for Muslims, the rejection of devoutness can mean the rejection of all their identity and even presence. The pluralism of the West is actually based on a monoculture. The West still assumes cultural pluralism as an exotic condition and unfortunately pays heavily for this misconception. It would be useful to comprehend this simple fact: the globalized world does not create a chance to form liberated areas. Inevitably, you are responsible for the global issues and problems to which you also contribute. When you ignore this, you can still be a liberal, but cannot become a democrat. In such a case, you move away from being a democrat as you become more liberal, since the globalized world invites you to understand and live with those who do not resemble you, and the liberal mindset is not designed for that. Expecting others to conform to this by underlining your own norms and ideals is just a form of orientalism and political apathy.
