New horizons for the new government (I)

The Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government has always differentiated itself from previous Turkish governments and presented itself to the public by making a comparison between the past and the present. In terms of public services, such a comparison has clearly been valid.Regarding the conception of the state, on the other hand, the AK Party has defined itself as the continuation and culmination of civilian politics, which evolved from the stream of decentralization in the Ottoman Empire, beginning with Said Halim Pasha to the political parties of the Republican period, such as the Free Republican Party (SCF), Motherland Party (ANAP) and Welfare Party (RP) traditions, all taking a stand against the extremely statist political structure. The more than a decade-long governmental experience of the AK Party has concluded with major achievements for the country. The decade-long journey of carrying the responsibilities of being a great state on its shoulders, the AK Party has gained all crucial and some bitter experiences in various fields. Foreign Policy: Among the states that remained of the empires that participated in World War I, only Turkey, the remainder of the disintegrated Ottoman Empire, could not regain its previous strength. The New World Order was, indeed, founded from this political context in order to perpetuate the colonial empires of the allies and prevent Turkey from regaining its previous power and influence. As soon as a rise of strength had appeared in Turkey, coup d'états and military interventions consistently suppressed such tendencies of revitalization.By its promise of a new Turkey, the AK Party government easily embraced large masses through its policies of democratization, economic growth and social welfare. The people's contentment has, in turn, stabilized the previously halting political structure. Furthermore, after an eight-year long passivity in its region, Turkey adopted an active foreign policy under the leadership of the AK Party. While the passive mentality to let sleeping dogs lie has been renounced, Turkey has begun to take part in the incidents in its regions of influence from North Africa to the Balkans and the Middle East. At the present point of the ongoing political process, two facts do not need any further revalidation. First, the AK Party has become a persistent political reality of Turkey and second, beyond the too-optimistic expectations, the Turkish side has achieved to test the true motives of each international party. Moreover, the present political status provides various opportunities and new horizons for each and every actor in the international arena. In this context, Turkey's bilateral relations should thoroughly be reconsidered without renouncing the ideal of "the new and great Turkey." Public Accord: Since the day of its foundation, the AK Party has worked for the country as a whole without discriminating between different factions of society and prevented the realization of disruptive motives of illegal organizations such as Ergenekon. Such an embracing attitude from the government has been crowned by its persistence in the continuation of the ongoing peace process. Both the destructive discourse of the main opposition parties and the intentional use of extreme force against various demonstrations by certain groups within the police force have led to the assumption that public accord has been disconcerted. Thus, the new government should re-illustrate the already existent public accord in Turkey to the people through deepening and accelerating the foundation process of the new constitution. City: Just like in the 16th century, Turkey has been re-established as a public space. Through economic growth, various economic sources flow to the cities that have all been reconstructed. Yet, as this rapid reconstruction has largely been unsystematic, our cities should be re-handled through a civilizational perspective. It should never be forgotten that cities constitute the true identity of a people. To be continued…
