Davutoğlu pledges joint effort with Erdoğan for "new Turkey"

Ahmet Davutoğlu became the chairman of the ruling Justice and Democracy Party (AK Party) at an emotional extraordinary congress that bid farewell to party boss Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who will take office today as Turkey's first president elected by the people.Erdoğan was once again the master of the convention as he laid down the basic principles that will dominate Turkey's philosophy as the country moves ahead to mark its 100th anniversary in 2023. In his emotional speech Erdoğan stressed he will remain the perennial leader of the AK Party movement and will stand by the party whenever necessary. He admitted the party was his fifth child and love which is a clear indication that Erdoğan will remain at the helm of the party in some form, while Davutoğlu is at the steering wheel. He did say he is leaving the party in the safe hands of Davutoğlu but it is clear that even Davutoğlu regards him as the real "boss," while the new AK party chairman also signals that he will put his own touches on the administrative style of how the government is run and as far as we can see he will make quite an impact.Erdoğan offered an olive branch to the opposition and went as far as to suggest remedies for the ills of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the conservative Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) in a rather conciliatory manner. He also told the secular elite of Turkey that he and his followers in the AK Party understand their sensitivities and reservations and sympathize, however, he asked them to make an effort to understand the sufferings, sensitivities and problems of the conservative masses that were clearly treated as outcasts for so many decades.Davutoğlu on his part told the convention he aims to follow a road map based on a reformation movement in nine areas. These nine areas covered three basic areas like the economy, foreign relations and of course Turkey's domestic social, economic and judicial problems. Davutoğlu sees the peace process with the Kurds as a vital issue that has to be completed, wants a new effort in the democratization process of Turkey, wants real reconciliation with the Alevis, wants deep rooted serious reformation in the judiciary, wants an end to bureaucratic oligarchy in Turkey, sees education reform as vital and wants an economy that produces high technology goods. He said Turkey will continue to run an active foreign policy based on principles and will not be bossed around.Davutoğlu had made similar suggestions during Ramadan in five areas at a meeting of the world Islamic scholars to overcome the growing problems of the Islamic world. It is clear that Davutoğlu is quite capable of identifying problems and has really pondered on how to solve them. This confirms our earlier views that Davutoğlu will bring his talents as an innovator in foreign relations to the economic and domestic areas in Turkey as he works with Erdoğan to usher Turkey into a new era.Today Erdoğan is sworn in as president. Tomorrow Davutğlu forms his new government and thus Turkey has a new cabinet.
