Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has started his tenure in full swing first by convening his cabinet, then holding a meeting of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) parliamentary group, presenting the government program to Parliament and then chairing the central executive board of his party. After the cabinet meeting, the government announced the departments that are attached to the prime minister and his deputy prime ministers and there was a major surprise as the Presidency of Religious Affairs (DİB) of Turkey was directly attached to Prime Minister Davutoğlu. Until now the DİB had always been attached to one of the deputy prime ministers, but for the first time, it is directly linked to the prime minister. DİB has always been an important state institution with a special status and a special place. But in recent years its importance has been enhanced as a major Turkish institution spread around the world in 100 countries serving not only Muslims but also all people in trouble.DİB has built mosques and religious complexes throughout Central Asia, Africa, the Caucasus and Balkans and has moved to provide knowhow on religious services and education all over the world. What started as a major institution that provided religious services and education to Turks working in Europe and with special emphasis on Germany became a major establishment carrying the good name of Islam to seven continents. It is this quality of the DİB that has attracted the attention of Davutoğlu, who realized that the immense potentials of DİB can be put to good use.The fact that DİB is led by Professor Dr.Mehmet Görmez, who has struck everyone with his superior diplomatic qualities as well as his personality and humanism, has further put the DİB establishment in high regard with Davutoğlu. Davutoğlu seems to be giving a message that he does not only attach great importance to DİB's potential as an effective foreign policy tool, but also wants to spearhead its effort to bring order in the Islamic world shaken by disarray and bloodshed. The initiative Görmez and DİB to launch a peace and moderation initiative in the Islamic world by international Islamic scholars has caught Davutoğlu's attention so much so that it was Davutoğlu as foreign minister who made a point of prescribing a five point plan to end the disarray and bloodshed in the Islamic world during the meeting of scholars in Istanbul at Ramadan.This is a clear message by Davutoğlu that he will use his good office as prime minister to help enhance the image of Islam throughout the world, show the true peaceful, humane and compassionate face of Islam and thus use DİB for this cause.
