The Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) has not only occupied chunks of Iraq and created a mess in Syria, thus prolonging the life of the Assad regime, but it has also successfully deepened the enmity against Islam in the West and especially in Europe, thus serving the enemies of our religion.We have seen a disturbing rise in Islamophobia in Europe in recent weeks. This is led by a movement in Germany called the "Patriotic Europeans Against Islamisation of the Occident" (PEGIDA), which has mushroomed into an anti-Islamic protest group.A record 17,000 anti-Islamic demonstrators rallied for the 10th demonstration in as many weeks on Monday in the eastern German city of Dresden. It is sad and highly disturbing that the ranks of this group have risen from a few hundred to thousands since October. Most PEGIDA followers insist that they are not Nazis but innocent German patriots who are worried that the Christianity-based culture and traditions of Europe are being "watered down."The fact that this movement has not been able to rally the support of the masses in western Germany, and the fact that their rallies are still attended by a few hundred followers only, is a source of some comfort. But it is clear that this group has found roots in eastern Germany that is a threat not only to Islam but to the massive Turkish Muslim minority living in Germany. Xenophobia is already taking its toll on the Turks in Germany and now with the movement against Islamic Turks, the threat has doubled. All such movements hide themselves behind innocent slogans that later turn into cruel movements, like the Nazis. We do not need to preach such things to the Germans who have experienced this before, with the worst possible outcome.It is clear that the enemies of Islam will be playing their dangerous game in the West for a long time. They try to provoke the Muslims of Europe by publishing cartoons defaming our Prophet in the name of "freedom of expression" and they produce anti-Islamic movies that only serve to anger Muslims.Now, thanks to ISIS, they have been given extra material to throw at Muslims. All this nonsense that Muslims are trying to water down the Christian-rooted culture and traditions of the West is nonsense. Muslims in Europe are on the defensive, simply trying to survive in a rather hostile environment. The European governments have a duty to erase this hostile environment and yet they appear helpless or prefer to remain silent, so as not to antagonize their far-right citizens. This is a dangerous attitude that only encourages extremism and, eventually, violence.Leading Muslim countries should join forces with European countries as well as the United States to counter the adverse propaganda produced by the enemies of Islam in the West through a massive well-organized public relations campaign. This should be done for the sake of world peace, not only to help clean the good name of Islam.
