Turkey's religious leader issues challenge in Jerusalem

The head of the Presidency of Religious Affairs (DİB), Associate Professor Mehmet Görmez, made history addressing a massive crowd of Muslims at the historical Al Aqsa Mosque during Friday prayers before attending the unprecedented special program organized jointly by the DİB and the Religious Affairs Foundation of Turkey to mark the ascension of Prophet Muhammad to the heavens for an audience with God. It was Al Aqsa mosque where the prophet rose into the heavens.Turkey's Religious Affairs and its foundation have become a giant foreign relations apparatus for Turkey, establishing offices in more than 100 countries and undertaking massive charity work as well as offering help to organize decent religious services in many countries and education to the young generation on proper Islam, which means a religion of peace and compassion as opposed to the radical preaching of extremists. Thus the DİB under Görmez has promoted global peace, goodwill, tolerance and the morals of coexistence, which is vital in a world where multicultural societies are in abundance. The activities of Görmez made a massive impact both in Turkey and abroad, so much so that the office of the DİB, which was a post affiliated to a state minister or a deputy prime minister, is now directly linked to Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu. But this also has a serious impact on the adversaries of Turkey and thus there was a concerted effort both at home and abroad to stall the DİB with special emphasis on Görmez. Those who wanted to silence Görmez started a smear campaign accusing him of forcing the foundation to buy him an official luxurious car, which was proven wrong as the car was assigned to Görmez by the Finance Ministry, although it didn't matter anyway as the gift was rejected by the religious leader of Turkey because of the controversies surrounding it. He has been the target of all kinds of childish accusations since then. What is clear is that outside forces coupled with the Gülen Movement, whose religious credentials Görmez challenged, are out to get the religious leader of Turkey.Görmez had opted to boldly hit back at his adversaries, just like President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan does. He has clarified all the allegations on TV but now he has taken his campaign to even greater heights, which even Erdoğan could not have dreamt about.Görmez went to Jerusalem, the holiest place for Muslims after Mecca and the Kaaba on a very special day and led the prayers at Al Aqsa Mosque, an unprecedented event. A couple of thousand Turks, who drew huge Palestinian crowds, had a massive impact on the hearts of the Palestinians, both in the occupied lands as well as in the West Bank and Gaza. His sermons and addresses to Palestinians at Al Aqsa Mosque were a clear message to Israel, to the international community and to Muslims around the world. "It is a wound in our hearts that Al Aqsa Mosque is captive in foreign hands," he declared in Jerusalem. He later said, "The reason why we came to Jerusalem was to show to our Palestinian brothers and sisters and Al Aqsa Mosque that you are never alone, you are not abandoned and lonely…" He also added, "Just as Miraj [the ascension of the prophet to the heavens] happened in Jerusalem, one day the Miraj of the Islamic nation will also happen in Jerusalem."Görmez continued his trip to Palestine, touring the West Bank and Gaza Strip, hitting hard against Israeli policies and complaining that the place had turned into an open-air prison. He congratulated the Palestinians for displaying dignity and honor while struggling for freedom and liberty, winning the hearts of millions of Palestinians as well as Turks at home.Görmez is hitting back in style, acting boldly in the one of the most critical places in Islam.
