Time for genuine peace, time for sincerity

On Wednesday, during parliamentary debates on terrorism, the HDP spokesman was full of fancy words that were highly moving. But we hear such fancy words from many HDP deputies and yet the words do not match the actions

The events of the past month have once again clearly displayed the value of the peace and reconciliation process between Turks and Kurds in Turkey and that this is the time for everyone to work for genuine peace and display real sincerity. This means the PKK has to stop antagonizing the masses, stop intimidating the people of eastern and southeastern Turkey and stop acting like feudal lords of the region. It also means PKK militants should stop terrorist activities of all kinds. On Wednesday, the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş said the PKK should lay down its arms but he has also suggested the Turkish militants should also lay down its own arms. However, Demirtaş has to understand that while it is normal for militants to give up their arms, it is not normal for the armed forces of a country to give up its arms. If the Turkish military does this, who will defend the borders of this country against all kinds of enemies including the hordes that threaten us from Syria? We have seen in Iraq what happens to a country when its armed forces shows any kind of weakness. Turkey cannot afford even the mention of such a thing.Demirtaş has to be sincere. In the past few months the militant Kurds of Turkey seem to have developed a new strategy that suggests they want to establish a sovereign region like the Kurds of Syria within Turkish borders and eventually part from Turkey. They should abandon this course without any debate. Many Turks have given the HDP the benefit of the doubt and they have voted it to Parliament with 13 percent and given it a respectable 80 seats in Parliament. On Wednesday, during parliamentary debates on terrorism, the HDP spokesman was full of fancy words that were highly moving. But we hear such fancy words from many HDP deputies and yet the words do not match the actions. The more they speak the more the PKK kills soldiers and policemen in cowardly attacks. Is this sincerity? They kill a soldier in front of his wife and daughter. Is this humane? They kill sleeping policemen execution style. Is this humane? For the past year the PKK has been progressively stepping up an arrogant campaign of undermining the state throughout the southeastern and eastern provinces much to the anger of the Turkish public and the government has forced itself to restrain its forces for the sake of keeping the "peace process" alive. The only thing we can accuse this government of is its lack of action for all these months in view of the open PKK arrogance displayed for so long. The HDP has done nothing in view of this arrogance and now they are paying the price for allowing the PKK to get out of hand.So in the end the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) has ganged up with the ultra-conservative Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) to reject a motion by the left-wing Republican People's Party (CHP) to open a parliamentary investigation on terrorism. So much for the efforts to forge a coalition between the AK Party and the CHP. This is the time for sincerity. We all have to speak and act for genuine peace and reconciliation between Turks and Kurds and we all have to be sincere, that includes everyone concerned from the political parties to the presidency.
