No one should test the patience of the man in the street

It is time for Kurdish politicians to declare in the eyes of the public, by condemning the PKK's increasing terrorist attacks, that they are the one representing the Kurdish citizens, not the PKK

The ambush in Dağlıca in the southeastern border province of Hakkari and the bomb attack in the northeastern city of Iğdır has shown PKK savageness has reached a new peak since the terrorist organization resumed its violent activities on July 22.Turks displayed great fury over the Dağlıca attack that left 16 soldiers dead and six wounded. People took to the streets in major cities and in some cities frustrated Turks clashed with police. The government vowed to take effective steps until the mountains of Turkey are cleared of all the PKK militants. Now we have the Iğdır attack on Tuesday where 14 policemen have been murdered in another bombing ambush. It is clear that the government, security forces as well as the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) are taking the issue very seriously and have launched an all-out fight against the PKK that includes restoring law and order in places like trouble spots of Cizre near the Syrian and Iraqi border. The military is systematically combing the main highways to clear them of the PKK militants who have been harassing the local people for more than a year. Security forces in the cities are working round the clock to weed out the PKK pockets that have been formed because the militants exploited the peace and reconciliation process launched by the government to enhance their terrorist presence in cities and townships instead of making a real effort to give peace a chance. The Turkish people have always displayed great tolerance, understanding and goodwill. They have not opposed the peace and reconciliation process despite the fact that most of our citizens did not really understand what the process involved. People gave the government the benefit of the doubt and yet the PKK misused this golden opportunity to help enhance the reconciliation process. Now with the new wave of violence unleashed by the PKK the Turkish people are angry, frustrated and feel humiliated. That is very dangerous. They now see that the PKK has no intention of helping a process where Turks and Kurds reconcile their differences and force a new order of coexistence. All they see is a PKK bent on dividing the country and establishing a separate Kurdish entity in southeastern Turkey. They see the PKK killing soldiers, policemen, doctors, teachers and other similar civilians in an extremely cowardly manner. Thus angers build up and the man in the street reaches a boiling point. This is where we stand at the moment. Now it is up to those who run the country to ease these frustrations and angers. They have to show results that they are effectively pacifying the PKK and thus appease the public while respecting the norms of a democratic country. That means while fighting terrorism they have to show utmost care to respect freedoms and liberties. Of course all this is easier said than done especially in an environment where the PKK does not respect any human values.Besides that, the ordinary Kurds of Turkey have to display solidarity with their Turkish brothers and sisters and stand up against the PKK violence. They should not allow the PKK to bully them and humiliate them. They should not allow the PKK to portray itself as the true and only representative of the Kurdish cause.Yes we always supported the idea that the Kurds of Turkey need to "feel" like first class citizens of the Turkish Republic. Now we also say the Kurds have to strongly and convincingly display their solidarity with the Turks against PKK violence and make the Turks "feel" that they are not alone in this fight. That means the Kurdish political movement has to abandon its indirect support to the PKK and stand up to the terrorists in earnest without hiding behind fancy words and creating alibis. There should be no "ifs" and "buts."
