US has bad track record with coups
Turkish leaders have said this is a test for America's sincerity and there are no ifs or buts
The U.S. unfortunately have a very bad track record of opposing coups in Turkey. It has backed numerous juntas in Turkey in the past and thus it was no surprise to any of us when the Egyptian generals toppled the elected government of Mohammed Morsi and installed a junta and received the full moral and financial backing of the United States.
We are aware that the U.S. is unhappy with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's administration and there is a general belief among a majority of Turks that Washington would very much be satisfied to be working with any administration that appeases them and tows their line instead of applying purely national policies and at times going their own way.Many Turks have also been saying the U.S. wanted to stage a coup in Turkey similar to the Egyptian example and topple the elected government with religious sensitivities and install a junta that supports secularism and does not question American policies in the region.So when word spread in Ankara that the U.S. is behind the failed coup on Friday many Turks were hardly surprised.
That should be very bad news for Washington. It is very bad news for us Turks who cherish good relations between Turkey and the U.S.
It hardly matters if U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry calls on Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and voices his displeasure about statements in Ankara that some ministers say they believe Washington supported the failed coup attempt because this is not a view of a couple of cabinet personalities, but a view shared by the masses in Turkey.
Incidentally these are the masses that braved the bullets and rockets of the rebels and halted their tanks to destroy their attempted military takeover on Friday. These are the masses who have proven their wholehearted affection and loyalty to Erdoğan. These are the masses who feel the U.S. is behind this atrocity. These are the masses that have to be convinced that the U.S. means well and would oppose any such coup in Turkey.
Even the act of suspending air flights to and from Turkey until Aug. 31 - hat decision is said to be revised to Aug. 15, which is still unacceptable - is an unfriendly act. Turkey is a strong country and things immediately returned to normal. This is not the way to help a friend that has just emerged from the terrible trauma of an attempted coup. Or does the U.S. know something about the coup rebels that we do not?
Supporting the Kurdish terrorists in northern Syria who actively help Turkey's Kurdish terrorists, giving them arms that are used against us, giving them training that serves attacks on us cannot be considered a friendly act.
The performance of the media in the U.S. supporting the rebels and interviews by so-called experts who expressed their hope the coup would succeed was awful. This did not escape the attention of the Turkish public and the fact that U.S. President Barack Obama's administration was so sluggish to come up with a statement to condemn the coup plotters.
Many people in Turkey also say the U.S. should concentrate on its own affairs and stop their country from sliding into civil war when three more police officers were shot dead and three others were wounded as people continue to protest police atrocities instead of meddling in Turkey's affairs.
Last but not least, it is very clear that the criminal Gülen Movement has now become a terrorist group that planned and financed a bloody coup in Turkey. The leader of the group, Fethullah Gülen, is a fugitive in the U.S., living in a lavish Pennsylvania farmhouse surrounded by supporters. This person should be extradited to Turkey swiftly within the framework of U.S. laws. He has the blood of so many people on his hands. His claims that he had no part in this coup attempt are a big lie. He has been doing everything to topple Erdoğan through every means possible until now and has failed. If American intelligence does not know about this then there is really something wrong with U.S. security capabilities. After failing in every attempt, he went for the last option, which was to stage a coup through the military staff he had installed in the ranks of the Armed Forces. He failed and now has to face the justice of the Turkish people.
Gülen is spreading false claims that this coup was staged by Turkish authorities. Those of us in the Erdoğan administration who went through the terrible night of the coup, those of us who know how they tried to murder Erdoğan, the Turkish people and the diplomats living in Turkey who lived through that night know well who did what. If the CIA were not on holiday during this period, they, too, can tell their government the naked truth.
