Pressure on Turkey to quit offensive in Syria

Turkish forces and the FSA have smashed through Daesh defenses in northern Syria, ending the PKK's dream of creating a corridor along the Syrian border

The PKK has stepped up its suicide bombing campaigns against Turkish security forces. The attacks in Istanbul and Kayseri left nearly 65 dead and scores wounded.

So what is the PKK after?

The PKK must be clearly aware that its campaign of violence in Turkey, to carve out Kurdish enclaves in southeastern Turkey and thus establish a Kurdish state, has failed badly. Yet, they still believe that with the right amount of pressure they can force Turkey to stop its offensive in Syria and allow them a free hand to establish a Kurdish state in the northern parts of Syria, just across the Turkish border. It seems their mentors, the Americans are giving them some very bad advice. The PKK, using the Democratic Union Party (PYD) in northern Syria, has eliminated all Kurdish opposition, has conducted ethnic cleansing campaigns to get rid of the Arabs and Turkmens in the east of the Euphrates and has created a Kurdish enclave in northern Syria. They also created an enclave in Afrin in northern Syria just east of the Turkish province of Hatay. So they just had to conquer the remaining lands in the west of the Euphrates that were held by militants from Daesh to complete a corridor that spans the whole Turkish border from Iraq to Hatay and then establish their separate state. The Syrian Kurds also grabbed the town of Mambij west of the Euphrates, provoking an angry reaction from Turkey, but the Americans promised Ankara that the Kurds would vacate the town and return to the east of the Euphrates. This has still not happened.

In the end, Turkey stepped in. With the help of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), Turkish forces smashed through Daesh defenses in northern Syria and liberated a chunk of an area 90 kilometers in length and nearly 35 kilometers in depth. This ended the PKK's dreams of creating a corridor along our Syrian border. Now Turkey is about to capture the strategic city of al-Bab with the help of the FSA. That will also block the land route that the PKK uses to provide supplies to its militants in Afrin. In short it will be a nightmare for the PKK and the PYD.

The PYD, which is being supplied sophisticated arms by the U.S., is handing over these weapons to the PKK to be used in terrorist attacks inside Turkey. Thus the Americans are encouraging the PKK and the PYD to stand firm in northern Syria, much to the dismay of Turkey.

But what is really sad are reports that at least two suicide bombers involved in the attacks in Istanbul and Kayseri came to Turkey from the PYD stronghold of Kobani. There are also reports that the highly sophisticated bombs that were used by the bombers were the work of western intelligence agencies, with fingers pointing to the Americans.

PKK leader Murat Karayılan and the Kurdish nationalist Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) have both stated that the terrorist bomb attacks would stop if Turkey "reviewed" its policy in Syria…

These are sad times when we cannot differ between friend and foe. There is a general belief in Turkey that our allies are turning into foes helping terrorists kill our people. This is a very dangerous perception and yet the attitudes and actions of the Americans and countries like Germany have to be blamed as they openly provide arms to the PKK.
