Ankara has proven itself to be a trusted and loyal ally of the U.S. over the decades. The Turkish-American friendship has withstood the test of time.

Turkey proved its friendship and alliance to the U.S. first in Korea, then in NATO, in the successive Gulf wars, in Bosnia and in the covert operations against al-Qaida after 9/11. We did not allow terrorists targeting the U.S. people to remain a threat.

Turkey and the U.S. cooperated in the struggle against the left-wing Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-front (DHKP-C) terrorist group, which also targeted American facilities in Turkey.

But in recent times, U.S. generals managed to convince the former Obama administration that recruiting the Kurdish militants in Syria to fight Daesh terrorists was a viable option and that is exactly what they did. Yet they missed out the part about the Kurdish militants of northern Syria, the People's Protection Units (YPG), being an extension of the separatist Kurdish terrorists in Turkey, the PKK. The PKK is legally a terrorist organization both in the U.S. and the European Union.

Turkey has over and over again called attention to the fact that the YPG and the PKK are the same and that the Americans are in fact cooperating with terrorists. This has fallen on deaf ears in Washington.

Meanwhile YPG militants have been trained and armed by the U.S. They have been provided with heavy weapons to be used against Daesh. They have been given massive American logistical backing. In return the YPG has trained and helped the PKK in its terrorist activities inside Turkey. YPG-trained suicide bombers have been sent to Turkey to kill civilians in Ankara, Istanbul and other places. YPG sharpshooters have been caught in Turkey.

Bluntly, this means the U.S. has cooperated with terrorists bent on destroying Turkey just for the sake of fighting Daesh. Prominent American Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham have underlined this over and over again in Washington.

President Donald Trump, who proved himself to be a leader of principles after he ordered airstrikes against the Syrian regime over the use of chemical weapons, found this mess on his plate when he arrived at the White House.

Now it is time he faced the challenges of our region. His upcoming meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is a golden opportunity for this.

However, U.S. generals are clearly following a dangerous path that is putting the U.S. and Turkey on a collision course. Can anyone dispute all this given the facts that we have already mentioned?

Hasn't the U.S. promised Turkey that once the YPG-dominated Syrian Defense Force (SDF) have taken the town of Manbij in northern Syria they would hand over the city to Arabs and that the Kurds would move out back to their bases in the east of the Euphrates River? Isn't it true that the U.S. did not honor this promise for over a year and now has provided protection for the YPG in Manbij against a possible offensive by Turkey and the Free Syrian Army (FSA)?

After repeated warnings Turkey recently launched airstrikes in northern Syria against YPG targets informing the U.S. beforehand so they could clear away their assets. Isn't it strange that a U.S. general visited the attack sites accompanied by a PKK official who is top of the wanted list of terrorists in Turkey. A U.S. general with a man who the U.S. regards as a terrorist. Or is the U.S. military now trying to legitimize the PKK as they did the YPG?

The U.S. has sent its armored carriers to the areas bordering Turkey to protect the YPG against any Turkish strikes. The U.S. Pentagon Spokesman Col. Dorian says, "They are there to observe and report, and reassure our allies. That's it." Why not just send observers to the area instead of armed armored vehicles?

I have said it before and I'll say it again, the YPG and the PKK are working hand in hand. The PKK continues to send terrorists into Turkey from northern Syria so if we hit these people again, which President Erdoğan has said we will, then what happens if something happens to the Americans in the region?

This is the mess created by some misguided American officials and it remains a mess that President Trump has to unfortunately deal with.

And let responsible people in the U.S. remember that Turkish-American relations will remain on the shoulders of the Turkish people. Yet Citizen Osman today is questioning the broken promises in Manbij, how the U.S. is supporting YPG and PKK terrorists bent on destroying our country and the picture is not bright.

Turkey does not and will not threaten its partners, friends and allies. This is not how Turks run their relations with others. But Turks also do not cooperate with terrorists who are bent on destroying the U.S. and harming American people.
