Lessons from the AK Party congress

Even though the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) is on the verge of turning 13 and can be described as a young party in the long history of Turkey, it has held power for the past 12 years by winning a total of nine elections. As well as having a distinct position in Turkey's political history, the AK Party has also left its mark in the world's political history. Therefore, it is associated with Japan's Liberal Democratic Party, which has been in power since 1955, and Mexico's Institutional Revolutionary Party, which governed the country for 71 years. Along with a number of discussions, numerous articles have been written about the AK Party's success. As the first chairman of the party, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's charismatic leadership, which has found great credibility among the public, his reformist politics, his correct reading of Turkey's society and his silent revolutions have played a major role in this success. The AK Party, on the one hand, managed to transform Turkey and, on the other, did not hesitate to renew its staff while initiating fundamental changes. It was able to reach out to different sections of society and to keep its organizational structure alive by replacing its members in Parliament with new figures every electoral period and by it changing its party organizations to a considerable extent in every period of congress. When considered from this point of view, the AK Party made its most radical move two years ago when it included Numan Kurtulmuş and Süleyman Soylu on its staff. As the deputy chairman of the AK Party and the deputy prime minister respectively, Soylu and Kurtulmuş, have brought political richness to the party. Today, it has become clearer that this radical move is not only a concern for the AK Party itself, it is also an important step taken for the great progress of Turkey.Although it seemed surprising when Soylu was first assigned as the deputy chairman, he made significant contributions to the AK Party in a short period of time by integrating himself with the party organizations and motivating the staff. During the March 30 local elections, the AK Party encountered many critics and multi-faceted attacks from outside, and this continued until the presidential election. It was a noteworthy success for Soylu to motivate the organizational staff in this handwringing process. This success reached its peak when Ahmet Davutoğlu was elected new chairman of the AK Party and new prime minister. A few days ago, Deputy Chairman Beşir Atalay highlighted the organizational success of the AK Party by saying, "Aside from the high temperature at the congress hall, it was a perfect congress."Everything was kept on track at the congress and the passion of the masses that filled the hall was also remarkable. There was no rival for Davutoğlu when he was elected party chairman and all 1,383 delegates of the AK Party voted for him. This showed that the AK Party has a sound organizational structure and that these passionate masses who embrace politics challenged the tutelage. The other political parties have many things to learn from this congress.
