In a world where the latest developments in the EU have brought pessimism, the re-establishment of Turkish-Israeli relations has sparked hopes in other regions along with the two countries involved.

Even though taking a small step for peace in the most chaotic region of the world has not had a butterfly effect, it is still promising at a time when racist and bigoted movements are on the rise, divisions are triggered, terrorism has increased with proxy wars and people are alarmed by the possibility of a third world war. Our world now has a far stronger yearning for peace than ever before, and this inclination comes to the rescue at the most desperate of times.

Therefore, the recent re-establishment of relations with Israel is a great success in the name of humanity since Israel has the power to affect politics and media around the world and holds the greatest capacity in the region to create or resolve problems.

This step does not have to bring major outcomes. Even keeping the possibility of peace alive is promising. Of course, some other steps will probably follow. It will definitely stimulate new processes with regard to Turkey's relations with the U.S., Russia, Egypt and Arab countries and it will profoundly affect the domestic policies of Turkey and Israel.

The current picture suggests that dissident groups in Turkey and Israel are not pleased with the result. While dissidents in Israel cite a profound defeat, those in Turkey refer to the development, saying that the Gaza blockade was not lifted and that it is a frail agreement with compromises.

Of course there is space for criticism and the agreement's deficiencies or faults need to be pointed out. However, it is not conceivable why dissidents in Turkey, who argue that the ruling party has caused polarization, ignored a step for peace that is likely to have profound effects on the region.

Some political figures have almost gone into mourning since they lost an argument they used to undermine the government with. However, the opposition must take on a more positive and constructivist role in a period when the world is in turmoil. The same pressure is also likely to be felt among conservative groups criticizing the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government.

If opposition parties play negative roles at moments when hope for peace flourishes, then their decline or dissolution is inevitable. It must also be considered that within the last three years, the perception operations by some political forces and media concerning Turkey have diminished. Some might find it exaggerated, but I think Turkish-Israeli tension had major role in it.

Also, it must be taken into account that Turkey's economy has not been undermined despite global pressures and negative developments worldwide; investments went on without any trouble and relations with Russia have been normalized just like relations with Israel in the realm of foreign politics. The developments in domestic politics come as no surprise in the light of all this.

As a last remark, I would like to stress that the normalization of Turkish-Israeli relations will economically revive the entire region along with the two countries, particularly in terms of gas. Politically speaking, it will minimize radicalization, as can be seen in Hamas.

Some steps toward peace have been taken in a region where risks are high, which is elating and promising.
