Gülenists using political parties as camouflage

Courts should waste no time in chasing the senior figures of the terror cult in the political parties they have been infiltrating since the cult's first days back in the 1980s

Lately, the political motivations of the July 15 coup attempt have been thoroughly investigated. A series of operations have been ongoing against the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) nowadays. A considerable number of officers in jurisdictions, police departments and military are being discharged from their duties. Undoubtedly, the applications such as ByLock which were used by Gülenists to communicate each other, were unraveled to have been seized in the aftermath of the coup and contributed to this process a lot.

Thousands of people have been said to utilize ByLock or Eagle system.

The data shows that around 60,000 names have been identified so far. While some of them have been administratively discharged from duty, some others have been detained following inquiry.

Undoubtedly, some political actors are within the realm of these inquiries. But no influential political figure so far has been mentioned in relation to the incidents. However, it is known that FETÖ also laid its hands on many political parties including the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), the opposition parties; the Republican People's Party (CHP), the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) and some other small-scale parties. Is it possible for a cult like FETÖ, which has been in multiple guises, organized like a "bunch of grapes" as a colonel said about their methods, acted with global-scale mentors and functioned like a state from the first years of its establishment particularly in terms of intelligence, not to get its hands on political parties?

Also, it is not a secret that they formed close relations with former prime ministers such as Süleyman Demirel, Tansu Çiller, Bülent Ecevit.

FETÖ infiltrated in political parties since its first years dating back to 1980s. However, the terror cult experienced its heyday in the first years of the AK Party which was founded in 2001. Even though Gülenists did not favor then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, they did not refrain from establishing strong relations with the AK Party. They had the most number of deputies in Parliament during the AK Party period.

As a matter of fact, the main goal of this structure was not to do politics but to redesign politics by taking over the tutelage regime prevalent back in the day. Therefore, they prioritized the activities motivated to seize the state control. The only measure they had in their relations with parties was to create an impression of being tolerant and impartial by forming contacts with all segments and gaining strength in the spheres of education and economy through this way.

But how did they achieve this? Most probably, they followed the paths opened in other institutions. For about 40 years, FETÖ has infiltrated in all public institutions without exception, including the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), and achieved it by assigning its "imams" to each institution.

The cult uses the code name "imam," an Islamic title that Muslims use to refer to a prayer leader, as a title for senior terror cult figures responsible for organizations and institutions, including law enforcement, the military and the judiciary in specific countries.

Interestingly, the majority of these imams were the names out of the profession or the institution, like FETÖ's Air Forces imam Adil Öksüz, who was apprehended at Akıncı Air Base on the night of July 15 and then released.

Now let's come to the imams of the parties. I wonder what kind of a method they pursued in the realm of politics. Was there an only imam generally accountable for politics or were there separate imams for each party?

The second option is more probable. Assigning separate imams to each institution including Air Forces, Land Forces, higher judicial bodies and the security directorate, the group might have also followed the same method for political parties. The mention about an imam accountable for the CHP also corroborates this argument. So, it is interesting that it has not yet been revealed.

Setting aside the small-scale parties, the imams assigned to the AK Party, the CHP, the MHP and the HDP are highly mulled-over. If the imams of political parties are achieved to be identified, then it would be much easier to reach the political motives of FETÖ and purge FETÖ completely from the political arena.

The following days will show whether ByLock or an election would perform this deciphering and purging.
