New AK Party and its effects on Turkish politics

President Erdoğan's return to active politics in the AK Party will also have positive impacts on Turkish politics

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's return to the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) means a rebirth for the party and has led to a profound transformation that is breaking the norm in the political realm. I do not know whether other political parties, particularly the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), will realize this fact and take action accordingly, but sooner or later they will have to face this change.

Now, the style, language and conditions of doing politics are undergoing a radical transformation.

President Erdoğan signaled the necessity of getting ready for the new period at the AK Party's third emergency congress. Drawing attention to the importance of the congress, Erdoğan said: "Our large-scale congresses are a means to review and supervise along with being an opportunity to determine who our friends are who will take part in party organs." He also added: "Under the pressure of tutelage, the ties between political parties and the national will were completely cut while state-politics and politics-ethics relations were defamed."

He also touched upon the party institutions: "A party whose members number 10 million cannot and should not have any difficulty in reaching 80 million people. Nothing can compensate for human contact and face-to-face meetings. We should ask about each and every citizen, listen to their problems, and show an interest in them through whatever means possible."

These remarks constituted the most critical codes of the new political period. The one uttering these words is the leader of a party that has 10 million members and a 48.9 percent vote share. Now, Erdoğan has raised the stakes even higher with the requirement of 51 percent to be elected. This is a revolutionary step in our political history. From now on, the 10-percent election threshold, which represented a line for stability for some while others thought it merely favored parties such as the Welfare Party and the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), has become a thing of the past. Of course, this fact does not mean that the laws on political parties and elections that are out of date will not be changed.

As of now, the 10-percent threshold does not have any significance. The threshold can be zero percent to enable the representation of different societal segments in Parliament and guarantee justice in representation. However, the new threshold a party must cross in order to come to power and serve the people is 51 percent.

This will also end the privilege of coming to power with a 20-25 percent vote share. This change will end the period of fragmented politics.

The period when political power was given to small-scale parties is over. The risk of being captured by the marginal party ideologies, which is the current case in EU countries, has also been eliminated.

The new period lays down only one condition for the parties: to win the hearts of the vast majority of society, which is not possible without touching the lives of different societal segments and building up a rapport with them.

The 51 percent threshold can only be achieved in this way.

In so doing, the parties with potential for growth can develop a new language and method of politics that will be more centralized and reasonable. The parties achieving this can remain in the political realm while those failing will have to leave.

As the CHP did not foresee this change, it has wasted its own and the country's energy for years. In recent history, the main opposition party has created a number of scandals including the hijab issue and the curious insistence on the quorum of 367 in Parliament. They even went so far as to assert that the amendments cannot be performed without shedding blood during the referendum process. No matter what they did, the results did not change.

So, is it possible to keep going without drawing any lessons? If they only list what they have gotten used to and kept pace with over the years, they will realize the meaning and urgent need of a transformation.
