Meaning of the presidential election

Turkey has entered a new era with the presidential election as the public directly elected a civilian politician for the top position in Turkish politics for the first time in the country's history. This is an important revolution in that it has demilitarized the presidential office that had been represented by bureaucratic power elites since the 1960 coup d'état, when the Prime Minister Adnan Menderes was executed along with two other ministers under fabricated charges. With the Constitution of 1961, the presidential office turned into a stronghold dominated by military and civilian tutelage. Since then, civilian representatives have always been hindered in every presidential election and this caused severe tension in the country. Turgut Özal was the only political figure who overcame this obstacle before Justice and Development Party (AK Party) rule.Apart from all the demilitarization attempts in politics, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's own narrative has given a new aspect to this election. Erdoğan hails from a disadvantaged and religious area that was despised and excluded from the bureaucracy by the Republican elites in power. He embarked on his political career from the lowest echelon and was always promoted to a higher position in his own right. When he was elected mayor of Istanbul in 1994, the tutelage strived to incapacitate this genius politician by using the ideological judiciary as a tool. He was sentenced to a 10-month prison term due to a poem that he recited publicly. All of the media outlets, particularly those that complain about the lack of press freedom to the West, targeted Erdoğan and demonized him. Worse still, the daily Hürriyet printed the headline "He cannot even be a mukhtar."Erdoğan helped found the AK Party in 2001 and brought it to power only a year later. Throughout his 12 years in power, Erdoğan and the AK Party encountered non-political and external provocations and conspiracies almost every day. However, despite all these obstacles, he managed to bring Turkey to a level that was beyond anyone's dreams. He survived several assassination attempts while the large majority of media continued to demonize him. Let us cite another example from the daily Hürriyet. This news outlet, which pretends to be a newspaper, has been the flagship of Republican elites against civilian politics. Just a few months ago, the editor-in-chief of this newspaper overstepped the limit and went as far as to say, "I will spit on Erdoğan's grave when he dies." This is just one among many other examples. The totalitarian secularists who control two-thirds of the Turkish media have been publishing newspapers that are filled with hate speech against Erdoğan, particularly in the last two years. And paradoxically enough, they unabashedly grouse about the lack of freedom of the press and expression in Turkey. This narrative of Erdoğan becomes more meaningful since it stands out with his attempts to introduce civilian politics rather than the difficulties he faced. Erdoğan overcame all obstacles, albeit rather unfair and provocative, with patience and civilian attempts. He has always appeased his grassroots base and directed them to the election polls rather than allowing them to get involved in extremism. This is an invaluable change in terms of democracy. Now, Turkey has to enter a new period in all aspects. The reforms that have been made in the last 12 years have changed the old state system to a certain extent, however this is not enough and the changes need to be institutionalized. Therefore, by taking the presidential chair, Erdoğan both demilitarized the office and gave an opportunity to his team to keep the party alive after him. Anyone who cared about his 12 years in power was worried about the post-Erdoğan period and this situation accompanied some criticism that stigmatized Erdoğan as becoming a one-man-band. With the latest electoral success, however, these anxieties were successfully removed. The new cabinet has a number of issues to tackle including a new constitution and the Kurdish reconciliation process. In the meantime, they have to prepare for the upcoming general elections. While doing all this under Erdoğan's presidency, they will also institutionalize the changes both for their party and Turkey.
