Opposition overcomes perception of AK Party’s invincibility through elections

Now we have come to realize that the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) can be overwhelmed through the ballot box, and that it is no trivial matter. We also discovered that it is more reasonable and realistic to seek a solution for better politics through the polls instead of going to the streets. This development has come true thanks to the recent policy pursued by the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahçeli. Actually, if there were a "medal of reconciliation and democracy" in the Republic of Turkey, it would be given to Bahçeli. Apart from his praise-worthy discourse and attitude, Bahçeli did not confine himself to the warnings to his grassroots not to get engaged in street demonstrations. He also displayed appreciable democratic prudence and proved that it is possible to overcome the AK Party through elections, and pave the way for the main opposition Republican People's Party's candidacy for presidency, by sacrificing his own party. The voters of the MHP welcomed Bahçeli's message so sincerely that they did not only support the candidates of the CHP with their votes, but also gave a boost to pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP), a party with whom they contrast ideologically. Rerun local elections in Yalova and AğrıElection results in the provinces of Yalova and Ağrı, where the local election was rerun last Sunday, also proved that the voters of the MHP received Bahçeli's point correctly. The CHP's candidate Vefa Salman achieved a razor-thin victory in the northwestern province of Yalova. The voting rate of the MHP dropped to one percent although it was 5.41 percent in the March 30 local elections. The BDP's Sırrı Sakık won in the northeastern province of Ağrı. Similarly, here, the voting rate of the MHP decreased to three per 1,000, while it was one percent in the previous election. If you remember, the CHP administration tested its model in Yalova firstly in the March 30 local elections, by presenting pro-MHP Mansur Yavaş as mayoral candidate for Ankara. Then again, proponents of the MHP had voted for the CHP. What does Öcalan think?Devlet Bahçeli's recent quest for a common "all-embracing presidential candidate" with the CHP as a challenger to Erdoğan indicates that Bahçeli displayed great altruism on behalf of the MHP.Even more, the attitude of the supporters of the MHP in favor of the BDP's candidate on June 1 election may be reiterated in the forthcoming presidential election. Perhaps Bahçeli may wish to hear Öcalan's advice on the idea of "all-embracing candidate" through a figure like Sırrı Sakık.
