Turkey was shocked when a prosecutor was taken hostage by terrorists on Tuesday. Mehmet Selim Kiraz, a prosecutor at Istanbul's Cağlayan Courthouse, headed an investigation into the death of a boy during the street protests in summer 2013. The terrorists announced that they took Kiraz hostage because of this investigation. After long hours of police negotiations proved inconclusive, special security forces came into play. According to the statement made by Istanbul's police chief, an operation was launched after gunshots were heard from inside the prosecutor's office while terrorists were speaking on the phone during the negotiations. The prosecutor was rescued in a seriously wounded condition, and the two gunmen were shot dead.The radical leftist Revolutionary People's Liberation Party-Front (DHKP-C) has claimed responsibility for the attack. The organization, which has been operating in Turkey since 1978, has thus far carried out thousands of assassinations and bombings, claiming the lives of many government officials, politicians and civilians. It is known that the DHKP-C is supported by President Bashar Assad's regime in Syria, as well as by some European countries, including Germany.The attitude of the Turkish media and the opposition constituted the most important aspect of the discussions that flared up after the hostage situation. From the first minutes of the act, the mainstream media actors' endeavors to legitimize the terrorist attempt raised eyebrows across the country. This was quite a natural knee-jerk reaction since it is unacceptable that the central media in any country can tolerate actors who embrace such a marginal act. Turkey's media outlets, including CNN Türk TV and the Hürriyet daily, which are known for their opposition to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), almost justified the terrorist attack. The violent messages that were posted on Twitter by the journalists of such media outlets were terrible.Unfortunately, the problem is not limited to the Turkish media alone. Considering the attitude of the European and the U.S. media toward previous acts of this kind, it is not hard to guess how they will approach this terror act. Most probably, the terrorists will be presented as "freedom fighters" this time as well, and by considering their daily lives, the fact that they were shot dead will be evaluated as oppression on their occupational group. The journalists who are criticized because of their tweets and news reports that praise violence and provide legitimacy for terror will interpret it as "oppression of the press." The possible legal investigations that will be launched into the matter will be used as evidence against Turkey in the press freedom reports of institutions such as Freedom House. A similar case was experienced a few months ago when a female journalist shared photos of prosecutors of a case on Twitter and pointed to them as targets, saying, "Do not forget them." Even her being asked to give testimony was discussed under the title of "the oppression of the freedom of expression."We all know the strict rules of the European and the U.S. judiciaries about supporting terrorism and pointing to people as targets. It is also known that such states take this sensitivity so far as to terrorize society. However, the same Western countries suddenly become radical human rights activists when similar incidents are experienced in an eastern country.Well, how can the means of dialogue between countries and peoples be kept open while this double standard of Europe and the U.S. continues? How can cooperation be made under the umbrella of international institutions?Let me make a long story short and end my piece with a request: Just put your hand on your heart and answer: Just one day before the terrorist attack in Turkey, two terrorists attempted to enter the headquarters of the National Security Agency (NSA) in Maryland with a vehicle, and one of the terrorists was killed during the incident. So, what would your reaction be if the mainstream U.S. media, their journalists and Republican opposition praise and support an attempt to invade the NSA? Can someone aching for peace support warmongering acts?.
