Turkey is: The continuation of a centuries-old and deep-rooted civilization, / Has 150 years of experience with a parliamentary system, / Has been a republic since 1923, / Has been practicing a multi-party system since 1946, / Is a NATO member, / A prospective EU member. / Is one of the most important components of the modern world and has a signature in all international agreements and is in the U.N. / Is a G20 member.On July 15, this country witnessed a coup attempt staged by a junta from the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK). Having organized within the state for 30 years, militant soldiers loyal to retired imam Fethullah Gülen, who fled to the U.S. in 1999, took to the streets. They blocked bridges in the country with tanks, they bombed the Parliament building with F-16s, they dispatched Underwater Offence (SAT) commandos to the hotel room of the country's elected president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, to kill him. They attacked police stations with helicopters. They massacred more than 200 unarmed civilians in the streets.We witnessed all this together. In addition to millions of people who resisted the coup attempt in the streets, many others watched live broadcasts of all the particulars of the coup on television.Fortunately, as a society that has previously experienced four coups and whose elected government was issued a referendum by the General Staff nine years ago, the public repelled the coup makers back to where they came from at the cost of their lives. Few people on earth could deserve such an honor of democracy.Coup forces surrendered to authorities, and those who escaped are being caught. The ties of coup makers to the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ) are clear. There is strong evidence. Confessions go on incessantly. All citizens in the country, regardless of whether they are rightists or leftists, are of this opinion.Despite this, EU countries and the U.S. that teach democracy lessons to the world are silent. Even one of these sensitive leaders who rallied in Paris for the massacred Charlie Hebdo cartoonists, did not visit Turkey, which lost 237 of its citizens.Even worse, every day we hear allusive statements from European or American journalists or politicians that what happened in Turkey was theater. Although coup plotters clearly explain why they acted, they claim that Erdoğan plotted it to increase his votes. Erdoğan's presidential term will end in 2019. He is the most legitimate political actor in the country at the moment and the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) won elections less than a year ago. There is not a single reasonable theory showing why Erdoğan needs such a conspiracy.One can think about nothing but the Gülenist gang's widespread lobbying network in Europe and the U.S. as the reason for this absurd attitude from the West. This is not enough, as one does not need to hear anything from others to believe what he personally sees.As an internationalist who has been serving as a journalist and defending the function of the international community and civil society projects like the EU for many years, I gradually began to think that simple moral theories from nationalists are true: The U.S., Europe, the West are enemy to us, the East. They formally talk with us, but always support our enemies.Truly, you push us to think so with your cheap harangues, saying that this was theater and that we die for the sake of a role in all fires that have been set in our country for many years.
