Following the heinous attack organized by the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) in Suruç in Şanlıurfa province last Monday, an atmosphere of large-scale conflict has emerged and spread rapidly throughout Turkey. Those trying to drag Turkey into the chaos of the Middle East suddenly came to the surface and began to carry out attacks in a flash. Taking advantage of the ISIS attacks, the PKK terrorist organization not only murdered two police officers in their homes and killed people in traffic in Diyarbakır province, it also started to carry out abductions, shootings and threatening citizens as if it were not a party to the reconciliation process that has been ongoing for three years with the state. We are familiar with the dark ferocity and barbarism of ISIS, but it is the acts of the PKK that has shocked me this time. What kind of a rationality or calculation could possibly lead the PKK leadership in northern Iraq's Qandil Mountains to re-initiate the war while the work to ensure permanent peace was in progress? How could it destroy the grounds on which it stands with its own hands while it has achieved a certain amount of sympathy in the west of the country from its fight against ISIS?Although such questions are rational, the stance the Western media adopts is quite interesting. Although the PKK was condemned at a state level and politicians issued messages of solidarity with Turkey, one can come across a large-scale shield protecting the PKK when looking at their media outlets. For one week I tried to follow all the major Western media outlets, including articles written in English, German and Spanish. Those following Turkey through these channels get the impression that while Turkey was shooting ISIS it also started to shoot the PKK for no reason, only to end the reconciliation process. The PKK attacks are not mentioned in most of the reports and opinion articles.However, the PKK is the one that took advantage of the ISIS attacks and began to assault the country in order to turn the country to its condition of the 1990s. Turkey is launching an operation against an organization that killed police and military officers and abducted ambulances. And the threatening point is that the reconciliation process has been shelved after great progress had been made toward permanent peace for the first time. The Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) has a great role in this. It must demonstrate whether it is under pressure or not. We are talking about a party that received 13 percent of the vote. It should say the violence should stop by using the power of politics for the sake of this 13 percent. It should issue a clear call to the PKK. Are they not the ones who head to the Qandil Mountains on every occasion and convey every kind of message to them as they want? They should act as subjects one more time and head there to say stop, not to the state, but to the PKK this time.The state also has a major role. The PKK's imprisoned leader, Abdullah Öcalan, played a central role in the progress of the reconciliation process. So he should also play a role in quelling all the current violence. If Öcalan is held captive by the state and resides in the prison on İmralı Island, the state should pave the way for Öcalan to issue a call addressing the PKK to cease the violence, just like he called the PKK to stop the violence during the Oct. 6-7 incidents. Why has Öcalan remained silent this time? Why doesn't he say something to prevent the continuance of the war?A commission should head to İmralı as soon as possible and bring a call from Öcalan addressing his organization to cease the violence. The question asking if Öcalan favors a war does not make much sense to me. Why would Öcalan favor a war that would cause great damage to his organization and would completely isolate him on the island again at the phase so close to resolution? We are confronted with a grave picture. We are obliged to turn out to be clear in a political sense and stick together in order to overcome this war with minimum damage. The work to build a coalition should be sped up if a coalition government is to be founded. But if the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) and Republican People's Party (CHP) cannot cooperate, it should be decided to hold early elections immediately at the end of this 45-day period.
