Electoral period starts

Turkey has entered the electoral period and the political parties have kicked off their election campaigns. After the upcoming election, no further elections are due to be held for four years. Since it is a comfortable period, all the political parties attach much more importance to the upcoming election. Last Sunday at the Istanbul provincial congress of the Justice and Development Party (AK Party), Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu embodied the political philosophy of the party in seven main principles by drawing a general framework. The number "seven" holds symbolic meaning for those familiar with Istanbul since the city is built on seven hills. The first principle Davutoğlu expressed was the politics of "unity." Although unity has always been highlighted in political discourse since the foundation of the Turkish Republic, it always signified a political union parallel to the homogenization ideals of Kemalist elites as a political project. Everyone had to be a "new Turk" defined by this ideal. Nobody could define themselves outside of this identity, and nobody could claim that they were different from the majority or sovereign ones. And nobody or any social or political movement could address diversity in Turkey. The censure prohibiting such expression has still not been completely removed from the law on political parties. Prime Minister Davutoğlu stated that all the denial and assimilation policies based on ethnicity, belief or culture have been abolished, and that all the diverse identities have become visible once more in their authentic context during the period of the AK Party rule. He also added that they rejected nationalism and any other political mindset based on ethnicity or beliefs. By defining unity as a coexistence of all diversities, he also referred to the "melting pot" principle of the U.S.The second principle he mentioned was freedom together with democracy since it is related to freedom. As Davutoğlu put it, a state that is not based on people cannot survive. And freedom is an integral characteristic of humanity. Turkey would advance to a better position with a constitution that institutionalizes democracy and provides liberties. The third principle is security. The Gezi Park incidents and the sabotage of the Gülen Movement on Dec. 17 and Dec. 25 in 2013 clearly illustrate the need to preserve and secure democracy and liberties. The disruption of public order caused by vandalism and violent acts that took place during the Oct. 6-8 Kobani protests also demonstrated that liberties could not be practiced in places where security is not provided. Davutoğlu presented Syria as an example in the context of the outcomes of weakness in security. But the most highlighted principle was definitely "justice." The justice system, which used to function as a strong ideological apparatus in the hands of Kemalist elites, underwent a structural change in 2010. However, thereafter, it came under the control of the Gülen Movement due to erroneous political methods. The last 18 months have seen an increase in efforts to root out this illegal organization from judicial positions. Of course, all these experiences created a feeling of mistrust in the justice system. Therefore, it makes sense to highlight the principle of justice. Additionally, it was underlined that justice is not only limited to jurisdiction, but also applies to income justice and the justice principle of the state in general.Capability was another principle which was defined as an expression of the determination to implement the sovereignty and political program of the state. The short period it took to reconstruct Van province following the fatal earthquake, and the domestication of our defence industry were presented as examples of this principle. The principle of honor is an integral part of the standard of capability. With this principle, it was indicated that Turkey shifted its economic position from a country which owes to a country that lends. Lastly, the principle of trust was mentioned. This principle indicates that political positions are guaranteed by the nation and that the requirements of this guarantee will be practiced by establishing a new democratic constitutional order. It is not hard to see that this political philosophy will be concretized in the election manifest.
