The pope and Putin in Turkey

The European Union should meticulously follow Turkey.Leaving aside Israel, which massacres Palestinians as a state policy, Turkey is currently the most outstanding country in the region in terms of military power, and is the only country with a parliamentary democratic system and stable economy. Turkey is now hosting important guests while the European Parliament "warns" Turkey with draft resolutions motivated by five Cypriot deputies. These resolutions, however, are not taken seriously by Turkey and do not interest the international community in the slightest. If Turkey is now a country that often welcomes the prime ministers and ministers of many countries, including those from the U.S. and EU, its reasons are actually quite evident. Turkey now acts as a bridge for the dialogue that is essential between the Christian world and the Muslim world. The fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) cannot be won without Turkey. The righteousness of the policies that Turkey has been determinedly defending for years, to provide a permanent peace in the Middle East, are clear. It is now obvious that peace in the Middle East is not possible with the mindsets of Syria's bloody dictator Assad, the Israeli government that violates the rights of Palestinians with state terror, the military coup regime in Egypt that overthrew the democratically elected president, and Maliki, who excluded the people of Iraq only because they were Sunnis. At this point of the Ukraine crisis, Turkey and its president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, have closer relations and dialogue with Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, when compared to the latter and German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The solution of the Ukraine crisis is not possible without Russia. However, especially the unhelpful policies of the U.S. and EU, who have clearly taken a side in the Ukraine case and undermined their own economies, constitute an impediment to developing a healthy dialogue with Russia.Paying a visit to the European Parliament last Tuesday, Pope Francis underlined that the EU is now in a complicated and unsteady position. In his speech, the pope noted that while the EU is enlarging, the world has become a more complex and variable place. Even though it is a deeply rooted union, Europe is seen as somewhat elderly and haggered by the rest of the world, the pope said. His remarks clearly defined the current situation of the EU. Within the pope's definition, the EU is now far from being an "example" or a "hope" for many regions in the world. The pope also touched upon the tragedy of refugees in the Mediterranean. He harshly criticized all the European capitals while addressing EP deputies. He claimed that EU capitals are responsible for turning the Mediterranean into a "sea of deads." At the press conference, held by President Erdoğan and Pope Francis at the Presidential Palace in Ankara, Erdoğan said there is barely any subject on which they disagree. The two leaders gave important messages to the world. The pope also praised Turkey's welcoming of immigrants and refugees and added that Turkey carries a burden of responsibility because of the history the country sits on. The EU must interpret this remark very carefully. The Russian president paid a visit to Turkey this week. Putin's Turkey visit, which reinforced the closer relations and cooperation between Turkey and Russia, should also be meticulously considered in terms of the U.S. Expressing that the responsibility of the current problems in the world cannot be delivered by only five countries in the U.N., the Turkish president stated his country's stance, which is supported and appreciated by the international community. Turkey also took on the presidency of the G20 Summit in 2015. Turkey now actually defends an opinion that is not loudly expressed by many EU countries.I think now it is time for the EU to question its relations with Turkey and the dilemma of Turkey's membership process. Not allowing the current Turkey to enter the EU actually contradicts the EU's own interests. If the EU does not want to be entrapped in the policies of trivial accounts, it has to remove the "artificial" problems it has with Turkey, which is becoming a more outstanding figure in the world arena day by day.
