Wrong EU policies and the youth joining ISIS

According to data revealed by Hans-Georg Maassen, the president of the German Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution, 40 percent of the women who joined the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) from Germany are under the age of 25, while 9 percent of them are at a young enough age to be considered children. Emphasizing that ISIS has lately begun to target women and young girls, Maassen said the terrorist group first contacts women sympathizing with ISIS on the Internet and then attracts them to the region with promises of marriage. Maassen said the romantic promises assured on the Internet come to an end just after the women join ISIS units, adding that the women's passports are seized as soon as they arrive in the region. According to official figures, about 650 people from Germany have joined ISIS and about 200 of them have returned to Germany. This is not only true for Germany. The situation is more or less the same in France, Belgium and the Netherlands. The EU countries, the EU Commission and even the European Parliament should not only be concerned with statistics. The main question is: "Why do these young people join ISIS?" And the answer is not as easy as Maassen's statement. Populist statements such as, "The girls want to get married, so they go," or "They are deceived with marriage promises" actually display the incapability of EU countries. Let us assume that the women head to the regions captured by ISIS by leaving their families and homeland in order to be wives of ISIS warriors. Then how could we explain men's motivation to join this terrorist organization? In brief, how could some minor groups of young Muslims living in EU countries be so easily persuaded by ISIS propaganda?Isn't it Germany that resists granting citizenship to people who were born in Germany and have lived there for dozens of years? In Germany, dual citizenship is still considered too much for people who have lived in the country for dozens of years. The right to vote in local elections, which is a standard practice all across the world now, is unfortunately still taboo in Germany.Last year, prohibiting circumcision was even discussed in Germany. Two years ago, the German Federal Ministry of the Interior used some contents and images that offended some women wearing headscarves while organizing a campaign against terrorist groups.Dual citizenship and the right to vote in local elections may not pose a problem in France, Belgium or the Netherlands, but the prejudices against and segregation of Muslims are at high levels in these countries. In all EU countries, radical right parties are almost specialized in Islamophobia. Moreover, the voters support them, too. The latest European Parliament elections proved that. Muslims living in EU countries always have to explain that they have no relation to terrorist groups. In a period when radical right parties of France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany have a new election victory each day, large masses support racist movements such as Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamization of the West (PEGIDA), which covertly expresses that it is against Islam and racist attacks targeting mosques have increased in the EU, I think we cannot claim that Muslim youths living in the EU are happy. It should not surprise anyone when a minority of Muslim youths chooses radicalism as a reaction to the wrong policies of EU countries. If ISIS forms an alternative to the EU for these young people, whom we are sorry to lose since we know that each individual leaning toward terrorism is a loss for humanity, the EU's wrong policies that have been ongoing for dozens of years have a major role in it. Instead of helping Muslims in their countries feel at home, EU countries, especially Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands, marginalized them from society. They have to regulate their policies immediately. They must realize how much Islamophobia has increased. Observing Muslim youths joining ISIS only as a criminal case, preventing them with police methods or blaming other countries for not stopping them by ignoring their own mistakes does not resolve the problem. Some steps that would integrate Muslims into society must be taken in EU countries. Above all, granting the same rights to Muslims in Europe as Christians in Europe is a prerequisite. Being Catholic, Protestant or Muslim should not make any difference in the EU, which means Islam should be acknowledged in all spheres of life. Muslim youth should not be discriminated against due to their religious beliefs in EU countries.Policies against discrimination should not remain a theory, but be practiced in real life cases. The EU should realize that it has made joining ISIS seem appealing to a group of Muslim youths due to its wrong policies. Otherwise, participations in ISIS or any other terrorist group will not cease.
