Two days ago, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had a telephone conversation with the European Council President Donald Tusk. Condemning the recent terrorist attacks in Ankara and Diyarbakır and conveying his condolences, Tusk said that the EU sides with Turkey in the fight against terrorism.

Along with Tusk, almost all EU leaders and many member state presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers around the world conveyed their condolences to Erdoğan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu while condemning terror.

Many members of European Parliament also spoke out against the terrorist attacks.

However, a parliament member, namely Ana Gomes, eagerly maintained a petition she had initiated. The petition the Portuguese social democrat kicked off urges removing the PKK from the EU list of recognized terrorist organizations. She insisted on conducting the petition despite the latest PKK attacks and those of its Syrian affiliate Democratic Union Party (PYD).

As is known, the perpetrators of the malicious Ankara bombing, which killed and injured many people on Feb. 17, are directly linked to the PYD, which cooperates with Syrian President Bashar Assad, who is a dictator. Gomes, however is seemingly indifferent to the latest developments. The PKK, which has so far killed thousands of people, has killed dozens of our people within only the last 10 days, which seems not to have affected her, either.

Does Gomes have a clear conscience in the face of all the horrendous terrorist attacks and murders? Gomes's name is imprinted on the minds of millions in Turkey. The mothers of people massacred by the PKK and Turkmens killed by the PYD's armed People's Protection Units (YPG) keep asking how a person can do such a thing. They are right in questioning her conscience.

What kind of a social democrat works for such a thing? How can social democrats advocate a terrorist organization that is hostile to peace, democracy and humanity?

No one in Turkey can understand the situation.

We might understand it if people bigoted against Muslims and Turks supported the petition advocating the PKK's removal from the EU terrorist organization list. It is scandalous, though, that politicians calling themselves social democrats, liberals or Christian democrats support the petition.

There is no difference between demanding the removal of DAESH from the EU terrorist list and the PKK. No matter whether they fight for DAESH, the PKK or PYD, terrorists and murderers are against all the values of the EU. If we make a distinction between Gomes's favored and non-favored terrorists, we would make a colossal mistake.

Of course, no one at European Parliament has to favor or advocate for Turkey or Erdoğan. Everyone is free to criticize or praise. However, it would be dangerous if unhealthy, dissident sentiment toward Turkey and Erdoğan evolves into hostility that goes so far as to back a terrorist organization.

If a member of a social democratic party acts in favor of a terrorist organization, the party's notion of social democracy must be questioned. The notion of social democracy aside, how can anyone defining oneself as a democrat want to remove a threatening terrorist organization from a list of recognized terrorist organizations?

But Gomes and likeminded people should keep in mind that the PKK militants they favor today are now settling in EU countries and getting ready to shed blood when the time comes. The PKK has so far killed people not only in Turkey and Iraq, but also in Germany and other EU countries. It is easy to verify this with data provided by police in EU countries.

I wonder how Europol and the police institutions of EU countries regard Gomes's effort to remove the PKK from the EU list of terrorist organizations. I can imagine their annoyance.

Whom does Gomes serve with such efforts?

We can clearly see that they do not serve EU values, the EU or the domestic security of EU countries. We are concerned about such efforts at European Parliament. We hope the majority at parliament, which would make no concessions to terrorism, will not allow such efforts to succeed.

The EU also decided to organize a Turkey-EU summit in early March at the EU Leaders Summit on Feb. 18-19 to improve cooperation with Turkey to stop the migrant flow to Europe. Nearly all the leaders of the EU curse terrorism.

But some people at European Parliament, which is the highest-ranking body of the EU for democratic representation, try to absolve terrorists.

In Turkey, the only thing that can be said to such people is: May God give you wisdom and good sense.
