The EU is watching Aleppo burn

While the European Council, European Commission and European Parliament are watching the tragedy in Syria with indifference, Aleppo, the last stronghold of Syrian democrats, is about to fall. A great humanitarian plight is being experienced now in Aleppo, lately the most critical front in Syria.

Hundreds of civilians of Aleppo were killed by bombing raids carried out by professional killers belonging to the regime of the fascist dictator Bashar Assad, along with airstrikes from the Russian air force. The people of Aleppo, struggling to save their neighbors trapped under debris, are trying to make their voices heard by the world through social media with the hashtag "Aleppo is burning." But as we see, no one is willing to pay attention to Aleppo, particularly in the EU and the European Parliament, although the latter has members who like to lecture about human rights.

There are increasing signs indicating that the soldiers of the fascist dictator are preparing for a comprehensive land operation following the intensive bombing. As the world, and particularly the European public, remains indifferent, Russian jets are shelling the city more frequently and Assad is taking courage from this prevailing silence.

How long will European Parliament members be mere spectators to the slaughter in Aleppo, where even hospitals and clinics are targeted? For some reason, those who organize meetings "for humanity and peace" in European capitals do not do anything for the Muslims who are being killed in Syria.

Within the last 12 days, some four hospitals and three mosques were shelled in Aleppo. Numerous people have been killed in the attacks, which directly targeted civilians.

When the militants of the outlawed PKK terrorist organization, who have murdered hundreds of civilians and have recently turned Turkey into a bloodbath, are killed in clashes with security forces, the lie that the "Turkish government massacres Kurds" enters circulation as a propaganda tool. But those making such propaganda do not display the sensitivity they show in the PKK case in the context of Syria. What kind of a conscience is displayed by this?

Is this how the EU defends their highly esteemed values? Does defending EU values mean being on the rampage in favor of killers, but remaining indifferent to innocents? I would like to emphasize again, maybe we will have to write this hundreds of times in order to make a few grasp the reality: Aleppo is burning and you are watching it burn.

Those who are remaining indifferent today will regret it tomorrow.

The EU has lately felt relieved to a certain extent on the matter of the refugee crisis, thanks to Turkey. But as Aleppo falls and people in and around Aleppo flee to Turkey for survival, the EU will also be influenced by this.

I wonder when the authorities in the EU will realize that their indifference towards the massacres by Assad and Russia in Syria will directly cause hundreds of thousands of new refugees heading towards Europe.

The EU does not have the luxury of resolving the refugee crisis only by signing some agreements.

Unless the barbaric acts of Assad and Russia are confronted, the refugee problem will grow even more complicated.

We are now watching the democracy crisis ongoing in EU countries with deep concern.

In Austria, the Freedom Party of Austria candidate Norbert Hofer received the highest share of votes in the first round of the presidential elections, with 35.1 percent. He was applauded when he said he was carrying a Glock-26 pistol with him to use against refugees, which is scandalous for the EU. "Glock Norbert" is one of the clearest examples demonstrating how Europe has been a disgrace in the refugee crisis.

Last Sunday, the racist party Alternative for Germany (AfD), which has achieved notable success in the latest elections, has announced that Islam is not wanted in Germany at a party congress meeting in Stuttgart. This announcement is alarming for German democracy.

All these are happening since the number of Muslim refugees arriving in EU countries is above expectations. As the number of Muslim refugees increases in EU countries, racist parties are gaining in prominence. The central parties are suffering huge losses in elections. Despite all that, those like "Glock Norbert" and AfD Chair Frauke Petry are offering solutions such as "all refugees illegally crossing the border should be shot." The course of events is alarming.

Aleppo must not be burnt and left to the hands of Assad, not only to decrease the number of refugees heading to Europe, but also to save democracy, which has recently been undermined to a great extent in everyday practice.

For this reason, the stance of the EU is crucial. The EU, which claims to set an example to the world for human rights and democracy, must intervene in Syria, especially in Aleppo, as soon as possible. It should adopt a harsh stance against Assad and some sanctions should be implemented on Russia, which has shed blood in Syria, as if taking revenge for Ukraine upon the EU.

Aleppo is burning and the EU should no longer be a mere spectator.
