EU needs new perspective on Turkey

When it comes to Turkey, the biggest problem facing the EU is its inability to make the right analysis, as it is mostly operating under the influence of misleading sources on Turkey. The crises on Turkey, do not provide the EU with any benefits, rather goes against its own interests and may even harm the Union in the long run. While the EU, under the influence of some marginal sources, tries to tackle some absurd issues regarding Turkey, countries like the U.S., Russia and China are swiftly improving bilateral relations with Turkey. The EU should not trust Turkey's economic relations with some EU countries and the country's position as a trade partner.Germany, one of the leading members of the EU, has made some serious mistakes regarding this issue lately. One example of these typical mistakes has been in the resignation of Martin Schulz, who left the Presidency in the European Parliament (EP) only to be defeated for the third time in his bid for chancellorship in the elections.Although there are numerous issues Schulz could address as candidate for chancellor, the former EP president has instead chosen to focus on taking a rigid stance against Turkey for no apparent reason. Moreover, Schulz bases his anti-Turkey position on a false claim which argues that a "death penalty referendum" will be held in Turkey, which is far from true. Although this issue has been widely talked about lately, there is no finite plan in this regard, as of yet.The "death penalty referendum," which is not on Turkey's agenda, has become a leading topic in Germany's domestic politics due to arguments presented by Schulz and some other, likeminded figures. However, as it turned out in the North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) state election Sunday, the German electorate took little to no interest in Schulz's allegations. They did not opt for Schulz's Social Democrats (SPD), the Greens or the Left parties.Instead of presenting solutions to the problems facing German voters, Schulz instead chose to shape his main arguments on baseless claims and the electorate seems right in their choice. The Christian Democrat Party (CDU), chaired by Chancellor Angela Merkel who has consistently defended the need for cooperation with Turkey in terms of the refugee problem, has so far won all the state elections for 2017. Citizens are primarily concerned with their own interests and consequently, the economic achievements of their country. No EU member state can contribute to its economy by creating false crises with Turkey or by taking a stance against President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. Especially, not in the light of several baseless claims. No EU member state can present its citizens with the prospect of a better future without condoning the atrocities of terrorist groups including the PKK terrorist organization and the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ), and condoning the harboring of militants belonging to these groups. On the other hand, Russia and China are constantly improving relations with Turkey in every field, since they are able to see Turkey in the right light. The EU, on the hand, is still pursuing a bunch of false problems and nonexistent crises, which is a great mistake in the name of the EU.Officials of some EU member states, including a few in Austria, lack the vision of true leadership and have issued a series of irresponsible statements, primarily motivated by their own interests.Although innumerable disrespectful remarks are regularly made by different EU officials in attempts to discredit Turkey and its president, the country maintains its determination as far as its EU membership bid is concerned and remains faithful to its accession strategy, in that respect. However, some circles in the EU are unable to evaluate this properly, as they support some absurd claims suggesting that Turkey has diverted away from the EU.The EU should have the ability to make accurate observations and analyses regarding Turkey. The bloc has also displayed an irresponsible attitude to some of its own citizens due to its inabilty to come to terms with a strong Turkey; neither regarding the economy nor security issues. Given Turkey's value as a middle man standing between Syrian refugees and EU member states, Europe cannot afford to lose Turkey in its fight against terrorism.Since the U.S., Russia, and China already realized this fact, they have attached great importance to their relations with Turkey. A series of countries including India and the U.K. which will soon depart from the EU have also begun to develop closer cooperative ties with Turkey in various sectors.Recently, China and Turkey have agreed to revive the historically renowned Silk Road project with the One Belt One Road (OBOR) project. The appreciation of Turkish currency in their economic relations with Turkey does not bother them, either. Meanwhile, in terms of defense cooperation, Turkey has become a significant partner, not only for the superpowers but also for many other countries. But what does the EU do in this regard? Some EU countries are developing close ties with Egypt's dictator Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, who ended democratic rule in Egypt with an atrocious military putsch, even referring to Turkey's president as a dictator while overlooking the fact that Erdoğan was elected via a democratic process. What kind of political ethics does this entail? Those who are disgracing the values of the bloc by having close ties with Egypt's dictator, find it ethical (!) to tackle Turkey's democratic regime.Incorrect policies like this cannot provide any benefit to the EU. It can even be said that this will do more harm than good to the EU, especially when taking into account the interests of the citizens of EU member states. It is high time that the EU puts forth efforts to conduct accurate analysis regarding Turkey, primarily for the sake of its own interests.
