Terrorism cannot be eradicated with terror

It will be too late when the EU and the U.S. realize that they undermined NATO's fight against terrorism instead of supporting it.

All NATO and EU countries are ostensibly against terrorism. They are particularly assertive about the fight against Daesh. All countries certainly agree on the requirement of dissolving Daesh, which has shed blood in many European capitals. However, many countries, including the U.S. and many EU countries, still do not seem to have drawn any lessons from history.

But the U.S. is already supposed to grasp the fact that a war against terror cannot succeed by involving other terrorist groups. This fact was revealed when al-Qaida, which was created to remove the USSR from Afghanistan, damaged the U.S. after the USSR fell. The U.S.'s plans to fight terrorists caused great losses and casualties both for the U.S. and European countries. Thousands of people were killed in terrorist attacks. But it seems that the U.S. and the EU are insistent on repeating their mistakes.

Those thinking that they can defeat Daesh with the help of the PKK terrorist group and its Syrian offshoots, namely the Democratic Union Party (PYD) and the People's Protection Units (YPG), are making a fatal mistake. With this bad policy, they are consolidating several terrorist groups while undermining others. Those equipping the PYD and the YPG with heavy weapons as part of the anti-Daesh fight will not prevent the use of these guns for other purposes.

The weapons given by the U.S. and Germany to terrorist groups are used against Turkey, which is also a NATO member. This bitter truth was unveiled numerous times when PKK militants were apprehended. In the past, PKK members were caught with the weapons given by Germany to the PYD and the YPG. The situation will not be different tomorrow.

Those wishing to end terrorism in Syria and Iraq have to fight against every terrorist group. Daesh is not the only organization shedding blood in the Middle East. The PKK and the Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) are as dangerous as Daesh.

Turkey is fighting against all of these terrorist groups in Turkey, Syria and Iraq. Unfortunately, neither NATO nor the EU supports Turkey in its fight. Worse still, the terrorist groups Turkey is fighting against are backed by several countries.

The U.S. weapons aid to the PYD and the YPG with some EU countries' support are aggravating the terror problem in the Middle East. And it has been proven that they do not fight against Daesh but secretly engage in joint action with them.

Germany's support for FETÖ and statement that it would give up protecting Turkey by withdrawing their troops from the İncirlik Air Base renders NATO a paper tiger in the Middle East. No matter what decisions they issue, NATO's classification of terrorists into favorable and unfavorable ones eliminates the chance of ending terror in the region.

It is scandalous that Gülenist officials who terrorized Turkey in a coup attempt and the individuals charged with espionage against the country are welcomed as VIP guests in Germany. It is unacceptable for NATO countries, particularly Germany and Greece, to grant the right of asylum to the militants of FETÖ.

No matter what kind of new decisions NATO issues regarding the anti-terror fight, they will be of no use in practice as long as FETÖ members take shelter in NATO countries while the FETÖ leader, who lives in the U.S., maintains his activities against Turkey. Likewise, as long as Germany grants the right to move freely to FETÖ and PKK militants, Turkey's reluctance to lean toward the German delegations who wish to visit İncirlik is more than natural.

Also, the German public must note that the military presence of Germany in İncirlik Air Base is solely symbolic. So, it does not matter to Turkey if this symbolic support is moved somewhere else. Turkey is determinedly maintaining its fight against all the terrorist groups in the region. If Germany gives support to this fight to a certain degree, it will be a positive development. But if they choose to withdraw support due to their issues with internal politics and election propaganda, then Turkey can only bid farewell to them.

The anti-terror fight will be undermined by withdrawing support from Turkey, which is exactly what is happening right now.

Terrorism cannot be eradicated with more terror. This would only aggrieve humanity.
