'Energy for peace' key motto at Istanbul Congress

Istanbul is hosting a key meeting on global energy politics with world leaders and business circles participating. The four-day 23rd World Energy Congress, which started yesterday with more than 200 representatives from 80 countries, highlights the current situation of world energy resources and possible ways to cooperate to enhance peace and stability and avoid disastrous competition to control energy resources. At a time in the world political spectrum when a country's hydrocarbon reserves are prime factors determining its future, the Istanbul meeting enhances the opportunity to label energy as a matter source of peace for a region rather than conflict."Cooperation" and "efforts for a common view to solve the energy crisis" are key mottos.President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan hosts Russian President Vladimir Putin and Azerbaijani leader İlham Aliyev as well as his Venezuelan counterpart. Turkey's position as an energy corridor will be emphasized, which will provide an opportunity to discuss key energy projects such as the "Turkish Stream" at bilateral levels.Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Energy Minister Berat Albayrak are key figures. With the theme "Embracing New Frontiers," the congress provides an opportunity for a broad discussion of regional issues in the energy sector. Africa is another topic where the situation on the continent will be highlighted with proposals for solving existing problems. Necessary institutional changes are another important theme to balance the world energy trilemma: energy security, energy equity and environmental sustainability.Leading energy, finance and technology companies are represented at the highest level. With an excellent view of autumn beauty, Istanbul provides the scene for new solutions and opportunities to the current daily and long-lasting energy-related problems. Let us hope that energy resources will be labeled factors of stability instead of long-lasting hostilities.Eurasian Tunnel under the BosporusTwo days before the big energy gathering in Istanbul, President Erdoğan and Prime Minister Yıldırım made a test drive on the Eurasian Tunnel under the Bosporus.
