Referendum to be a clear response to July 15 coup attempt

If the 'yes' campaign wins in the April 16 referendum, the governance system will become stronger, the new constitution will become more civil and Turkey will have a healthier democracy

Turkey has been taking steps toward a crucial turning point with April 16 named the day of the expected referendum to determine a new system of government. As President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently stated just before his departure to tour the Gulf countries, the April 16 referendum will provide the "answer" for the Turkish people following the July 15 coup attempt by Gülenist Terror Group (FETÖ) putschists who targeted Turkish democracy. If the referendum results in a "yes" vote victory, April 16 will pave the way for a more democratic atmosphere in Turkey, giving the people a voice in the system and allow the country to put into practice and adopt universal democratic values. In the current parliamentary system, Turkish democracy has suffered various crises, such as coalition deadlocks, involvement of external actors in Turkish politics, and the global operations against the stability and unity of the country. What is the worst, however, is that Turkish democracy was damaged by coups and coup attempts roughly every decade.Turkey only managed to heave a sigh of relief in 2014 when Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was elected as president by the popular vote of the Turkish people in the country's first election of a president in its Republican history. The election was good news for improving the much-damaged democracy, but of course, was not enough to strengthen it.Following the election, Turkey could at least overcome some internal and external operations with steps taken by a strong presidency.Even though these were not enough to solve all the democratic problems in the country, the Turkish people were happy to see Erdoğan's powerful presidency. This is probably the most basic way of understanding why the majority of the Turkish people now support the upcoming referendum, which will bring the presidential system into the country. They want a stronger presidency and form of government that will make the country stronger.Another reason for the Turkish peoples' support for the referendum is that the current Constitution, which was prepared by militarist cadres in the aftermath of the coup on Sept. 12 in 1980, will be reformed. The new constitution will be more civil and more democratic, which means Turkey will get rid of the militarist pressure. But of course that is why Westerners, terrorist and pro-terrorist groups as well as anti-Turkish circles object to the referendum; they are used to manipulating weak Turkish governments.I hope April 16 will be the day for a healthier Turkish democracy with a stronger presidency and stronger constitution. I hope April 16 will be the day that says "no" to coup attempts and I hope April 16 will be our democratic revolution.
