We are only one day away from the local elections. The whole election campaign has been focused on the personality and policies of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan rather than on local or municipal issues. Quite unexpectedly, a whole organization looking like the SMERSH Soviet antispy agency, James Bond's nemesis in many of the books, surfaced as a major political force. In fact, SMERSH was a real organization, established under Stalin during WWII to infiltrate the enemy, ensure ideological control of the Soviet Army and detect traitors, deserters and "anti-Soviet elements." The Gülen confraternity seems to fit very much in this kind of "ideological command and control" mechanism, a totalitarian regime.Despite major steps taken by the government, incredible fabricated information is being leaked on social media, covering socalled telephone conversations made by the premier's family. Prime Minister Erdoğan is a very caring father, always very fond of his children and grandchildren. His most vulnerable part is constantly targeted: his family. Not only does the information concerning his family remain extremely dubious in regard to its authenticity, but the tapes do not contain anything that could be taken as a felony or crime. This is done only to make the prime minister's family look disgraceful and ashamed.There has been a major diplomatic scandal carefully prepared by the Gülen Movement and leaked to social media. This scandal is a conversation between the minister of foreign affairs, the undersecretary of state of foreign affairs, the head of Turkish intelligence and the second chief of general staff of the Turkish Armed Forces recorded illegally and sent to social media.The conversation is extremely confidential and concerns the situation at the Syrian border, where fierce fighting between the remnants of the Syrian army loyal to President Bashar Assad and different insurgent movements. The conflict has been affecting the neighboring Turkish regions and territories, creating a terrible human tragedy and sparking a mass migration of about 900,000 Syrians into Turkey. Of these, 200,000 live in exceptionally well organized refugee camps, costing Turkish government around $1 billion (TL 2.19 billion) per year.The conversation, taken by bits and pieces, was arranged to depict Turkey's policy as very belligerent, almost hungry to go to war, plotting to create a frontier incident to send to Turkish Armed Forces into Syria.No one clearly knows where nor under which circumstances the conversation took place. Still, the fact that an extremely secret meeting, probably within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, could have been so easily tapped and almost immediately leaked to social media shows the extreme hazard created by this movement.The recent events have gone way beyond the scope of a political struggle, through unorthodox means. This is plainly treason and warfare. Perpetrators of these actions are to be brought in front of the firing squad, to be shot without mercy. I never thought I could write such a sentence in 2014 in Turkey, but the "scorched earth" policy of this Gülen Movement is a major and extremely dangerous obstacle toward any democratic functioning. Stalin's SMERSH organization was established to kill all the spies if necessary, even if in retaliation all Soviet spies were assassinated. Very clearly, his move inspired some people in Pennsylvania.
