Gülenist terror organization and the US
Turkey returned from the brink of the abyss on July 15. Tanks blocked the streets and bridges, F-16 jets flew low over cities and Gülenist troops targeted and killed many civilians standing up against tanks to defend democracy, all of which constituted major delirium. During the violent insurrection, a total of 240 people were killed, including 173 civilians, 65 police officers and five military officers, while 1,535 people were injured. Elected by 52 percent of the popular vote, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and his family faced assassinated. Commanders were apprehended and Parliament was bombed. As part of the operations launched after quelling the coup attempt, some 8,600 people were detained for questioning, while 990 of them were arrested.
This coup attempt, which was hampered thanks to the mythical courage of civilians lying in front of tanks and taking to the streets in spite of the bullets, must be analyzed correctly and meticulously. It was not a coup attempt by the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), but the product of a junta movement within the army. This junta was formed by the Gülenist Terror Organization (FETÖ) headed by Fethullah Gülen, a former Islamic clerk who currently resides in the U.S. In other words, Turkey encountered a Gülenist coup attempt on July 15.
The latest turmoil revealed that Gülen, who owns the most widespread and insidious terrorist organization in the world, can even afford to kill innocent civilians for his aims. As always, Gülen is immorally rejecting his involvement in the insurrection. However, almost every name involved in the coup attempt turned out to be a FETÖ member. The apprehended officers also confessed their affiliation with Gülen.
Chief of General Staff Hulusi Akar's aide is also among these names. His aide, Lieutenant Colonel Levent Türkkan, confessed to being a FETÖ member. He also added that he wiretapped Akar and delivered the records to Gülenists. In the tanks blocking the streets of Istanbul, former police chiefs that were discharged from duty due to their ties with Gülen were apprehended. Even daily Hürriyet columnist Taha Akyol , who never hides its sympathy towards Gülen, admitted the fact that Gülen was behind the coup attempt and had to criticize the terrorist leader. The picture is clear. There is no room for doubt that Gülen ordered the military officers he controlled to attack civilians, kill people, and drag the country to the brink of a great abyss.
On the other hand, the command echelon of the TSK resisted the coup attempt in a proper befitting their position, proving that Turkey has changed and has become more democratized and demilitarized. The TSK's command echelon and other units standing against the junta across Turkey playing a large role in disrupting the coup attempt.
This coup attempt has a significant difference from former coups staged or attempted in Turkey. The former coups did not aim to change the regime. They were disgraceful interventions in order to dominate civil politics and control the governance of the country. However, this coup attempt was motivated to change the regime in Turkey. If the attempt had succeeded, Turkey would have entered an irreversible phase of military dictatorship. This military dictatorship would be controlled by Gülen and the ruling power would never be in the hands of the nation and civil politicians.
In the light of all these factors, Turkey is demanding the extradition of Gülen from the U.S. During his meeting with U.S. President Barack Obama the previous day, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan repeated this request once again. Some four files about the illegal activities of Gülen in Turkey were sent to U.S. authorities. Turkey and the U.S. have a mutual extradition agreement. Erdoğan remarked that Turkey will not extradite U.S. requests unless Gülen is extradited.
Turning a deaf ear to the charges against Gülen, the U.S. has seemed reluctant on this subject so far and therefore has been party to the crimes of Gülen by keeping him. The U.S. now has to adopt a certain attitude regarding Gülen, who has started to shed blood. Otherwise, the U.S. will never be forgiven by the Turkish people, who stood up against Gülen's coup attempt and defended democracy by lying in front of tanks.
