German defense contractor allegedly puts arms embargo on Turkey


German weapons manufacturing company, Heckler & Koch has allegedly placed an weapons embargo on Turkey as reported by the Hürriyet daily yesterday.

About the issue, Turkish officials said the country's contract with Hecklert&Koch includes numerous articles in favor of Turkey and if the company really does decide to stop selling arms to Turkey, it may face billions of dollars be paid in compensation.

Turkey has long continued its efforts to produce homegrown equipment and military vehicles. On Nov. 17, Turkish Defense Minister Fikri Işık said as part of Turkey's first domestic and national rifle program, the production of the first set of modern infantry rifles, the MPT-76 [500 rifles] has been completed and an additional 19,500 rifles will be finalized by Sept. 2017.

Turkey has been manufacturing Heckler & Koch's G-3, MP-5 and MG-3 infantry rifles at its Kırıkkale province under license from the company.
