First ALTAY tank to be put into service by 2020
With the publication of the 2017-2021 Strategic Plan by the Undersecretariat for Defense Industries (SSM), the date which the first ALTAY Main Battle Tank will be put into service has been announced.
According to the SSM's plan, the mass production contract for the ALTAY National Main Battle Tank will be signed this year and it was stated that the first 15 tanks will be put in to service in 2020, and 20 tanks will be delivered in 2021.
Otokar, one of the companies of the Koç Group that manufactures buses for public transportation, semi-trailers for the transportation and logistics industry, and tracked armored vehicles and tactical armored vehicles for the defense industry, announced through its official social media account that the ALTAY Main Battle Tank has reached its final stage in acceptance tests.
The strategic plan, published by the SSM, says that the ALTAY Main Battle Tank has been developed through a cooperative effort by the Turkish defense industry and has a national and original design, and the world's most advanced technology subsystems.
According to the publication, the tank has completed the most demanding tests with outstanding success thanks to its mobility, firepower and survivability, and has been qualified and made ready for serial production much sooner than its samples across the world.
Altay is the third generation of the MBT, Turkey's first indigenous tank development program. The tank is named after Army General Fahrettin Altay, who commanded the V Cavalry Corps during the Turkish War of Independence.
SSM awarded Otokar the $500 million (TL 1.06 billion) contract, which includes design, development and integration of the Altay and qualification of the tank through prototypes and testing in 2007; the first prototype was publicly revealed in 2011.
Under the Altay project, Aselsan, a Turkish defense industry giant, will be producing the new generation fire-control system and the command and control information system of the tank, while with technology transfer from South Korea's Hyundai Rotem, the Turkish Mechanical and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKE) will develop the 120-millimeter gun and ROKETSAN, the modular armor of the tank
