More effort needed to counter ISIS propaganda, says German ambassador

German Ambassador to Ankara Eberhard Pohl said in relation to the issue of foreign fighters in Germany that all efforts need to be made to prevent young people, whether they are in Turkey or in Germany, from gravitating toward inhuman ideologies like the one of the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS).Speaking exclusively to Daily Sabah, Pohl underlined the importance of fighting ISIS propaganda, which attracts the younger generation in Germany to go and fight along with it and similar groups in Iraq and Syria. "Most certainly, the state and society have the duty to provide help for young people in search of orientation, to offer guidance and counseling for people to turn to when son, daughter, brother, sister or friends are in a process of dangerous radicalization," Pohl told Daily Sabah.German security services say that at least 600 young people from Germany have left the country to fight along with ISIS in Syria and Iraq. According to German officials, there had been a huge rise in cases of people suspected to be members of ISIS and Germany was "in the crosshairs of jihadist terror." However, the security services have also been working to monitor and contain the flow of foreign fighters, an effort that gained momentum following the recent Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris.Pohl underlined the German government's efforts regarding its integration policy of immigrants in Germany: "Especially youths have to feel accepted in our societies and enjoy equal and fair chances in education and professional life. Those are exactly the goals the German government aims to achieve within its integration policy." On the claims that German Chancellor Angela Merkel is searching for a new kind of intelligence sharing with Ankara to counter terrorism, the ambassador stressed that the cooperation between Germany and Turkey is working well: "In regular consultations of the state secretaries from our Interior Ministries, we draw conclusions, improve cooperation wherever it is possible and tackle new challenges together." In relation to German humanitarian aid to Syrian victims of conflict, Pohl said the German aid is "extensive." "For Syrian victims of the conflict, Germany gives extensive humanitarian aid and is, together with Turkey, actively searching for solutions. However, beyond this, people in Syria and Iraq have to be enabled to effectively resist ISIS. Therefore, I see the train and equip approach as a viable way," he said. Pohl pointed to the increasing level of cooperation between Germany and Turkey after Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu's visit to Germany. "During their recent meeting in Berlin Chancellor Merkel and Prime Minister Davutoğlu agreed on new measures of government consultations. The cooperation between Germany and Turkey will be elevated to a new level. This next step was important and overdue at the same time," Pohl added.
