‘Former President Gül won’t be a candidate in upcoming elections’

Turkey's former President Abdullah Gül will not run for the parliament in the upcoming elections, AK Party Deputy Chairman and Spokesperson Beşir Atalay confirmed in a press conference on Thursday. "What we understand from his comments is that he won't be a candidate in the upcoming elections," Atalay said during the press conference.Abdullah Gül left office in August 2014 when current president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was elected as the president. Gül, as one of the founders of the AK Party, has repeatedly made remarks supporting both Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu and President Erdoğan, and said that if he returns to politics he would take part in AK Party for active politics.
