Diplomat thanks Turkey for preventing Israeli from joining ISIS


Israeli Charge d'affaires Amira Oron, praised Turkish authorities for their efforts to fight the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and preventing Israeli citizens from joining the international terrorist organization. The Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Tuesday that Turkish officials worked together with Israeli representatives over the last couple of days to locate and return a 21-year-old Israeli who left the country with the intention of joining ISIS.Commenting on this issue Oron told Daily Sabah on Tuesday that Turkish police located the Israeli at the last minute just before he tried to cross the Turkish-Syrian border and successfully prevented him from joining ISIS. "We do appreciate the big efforts that Turkish police invested for locating the Israeli in İskenderun and we are thankful for it," Oron said. ''Even though it is a small number like all other countries, the ISIS disease also affects Israeli citizens," she said regarding the question about the number of Israeli citizens who have joined ISIS. She also said that they have good cooperation with Turkey to prevent Israeli citizens from joining ISIS. Israeli Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Alon Lavi said on Tuesday that they received a call Thursday from a family concerned about their son who flew to Turkey on his way to Syria with the intention of joining ISIS. He said that Israel was working with Interpol and the Israeli Embassy and Consulate in Ankara and Istanbul to locate the Israeli. After locating the Israeli citizen in İskenderun, police informed Israeli officials in Ankara, and the 21-year old was repatriated to Israel.Turkey has more than a 900-kilometer border with Syria and is taking strong measures to prevent foreign fighters traveling to conflict zones. The Foreign Ministry recently announced that officials have banned entry to the country to more than 18,000 people along with 1,900 people being deported and 1,500 being sent back from the airports.
