Austrian FM voices support for safe zone

Austrian Foreign Minister Sebastian Kurz, in a press meeting with his Turkish counterpart Feridun Sinirlioğlu in Ankara over the weekend, voiced his support for establishing a safe zone inside Syria for the country's refugees.

"We support the safe zone idea. We believe that to create a safe zone for refugees is of the utmost importance. We will welcome it if the U.N. shows a more intensive engagement on this issue. Countries such as Austria would also contribute [to the safe zone issue] in the medium term," Kurz said over the increasing refugee issue that has recently come to Europe's door.

Discussing with Sinirlioğlu the regional chaos and refugee problem that Europe faces, Kurz said all the regional powers along with Russia and the U.S. should take an active role in the Syrian crisis and that the current Syrian regime has no place in the future governing of the country.

"I believe we all should continue on the same path [over the Syrian crisis]. We appreciate Turkey's efforts to bring all the actors together around the same table," the Austrian foreign minister said.

Calling on the U.N. and the EU, Sinirlioğlu underscored in the meeting that Turkey took concrete steps toward the refugee crisis, as part of international law, and took all the necessary measures to prevent illegal immigration.

Pointing out the despair refugees face, Sinirlioğlu said, "They [the refugees] are so desperate that they sail, risking even their children's lives. They take a risk [in reaching foreign countries]. It is not possible to completely eliminate this from happening. We cannot deal with this only through detective measures. But, what should be done is to remove the reasons behind it."
