Turkey's Supreme Military Council (YAŞ) agreed to keep military channels with Russia open, a statement released after a YAŞ meeting on Thursday said.The statement said the meeting chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan focused on the recent developments around the Turkey-Syria border, reviewed the army's readiness for combat and discussed the ongoing fight against terrorist groups in the region.The Turkish officials agreed to "keep military and diplomatic channels open with Russia to prevent another unpleasant incident from taking place between the two militaries."However, the Russian Defense Ministry announced on Thursday that all military cooperation channels with Turkey have been cut following the downing of Russia's Su-24 fighter jet."This concerns all ties, not just the so-called hotline that was launched in order to avoid possible air incidents during the destruction of terrorist infrastructure in Syria," Russian Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said.On Nov. 24, two Turkish F-16 fighter jets on an aerial patrol intercepted a Russian warplane when it violated Turkish airspace near the Syrian border.The Russian warplane received 10 warnings to vacate Turkish airspace within five minutes before it was shot down.This was not the first time Russian warplanes had violated Turkish airspace. In October, Russian warplanes violated Turkish airspace after which Russian officials apologized and pledged that such incidents would not reoccur in the future.
