Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu is set to attend the NATO Foreign Ministers Meeting on Thursday in Brussels where his agenda will focus on regional matters and the ongoing tensions with Russia following Turkey's downing of a Russian jet that violated its airspace in late November 2015.The meeting will be held on May 19-20 with a busy agenda that aims to address topics including NATO partnerships in the South Caucasus, NATO and allied exercises ahead of the Warsaw Summit as well as meeting sessions held with Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region representatives. Çavuşoğlu is expected to reiterate the need for more cooperation to combat terrorism and further emphasize the importance of intelligence sharing with efforts to combat terrorist organizations and fully halt illegal migration.The NATO Foreign Ministers Meetings takes place twice a year chaired by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg. While Stoltenberg is planning to hold a joint press conference with representative from Montenegro, those at the meeting are expected to address other significant issues such as how NATO can do more to fight terrorism and DAESH. Another important issue is the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe, including the NATO ships sent to Greek and Turkish waters in the Aegean Sea in early March to counter the criminal networks smuggling migrants into Europe.Some of the agreements and decisions are to be announced on the second day of the meeting, yet the Secretary General will announce the outcomes of each meeting during press conferences.Ankara expects NATO member countries to express their full support for Turkey during the meeting especially regarding the refugee crisis and combating terrorism.
