The foreign ministry said on Sunday that Turkey shares the Colombian people's grief and is ready to provide support following mudslides which left nearly 200 people dead and hundreds of others injured.

"Turkey stands with Colombia and is ready to provide all types of assistance whereby it is necessary" the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The statement also expressed solidarity with the people of Colombia and extended condolences to those who have lost loved ones in the disaster, while wishing a speedy recovery for the injured.

A sudden surge of mud and water destroyed homes and infrastructure in the southwestern Colombian town of Mocoa.

Search and rescue teams continue their work, as authorities note over 220 people are feared to be missing.
