President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is set to meet his U.S. counterpart President Donald Trump in Washington before a NATO summit in May for their first face-to-face talks.

"As President Erdoğan and the U.S. President Trump decided, we will determine a date for them to meet before the NATO summit in May," Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu confirmed Wednesday.

While stating that he also had a conversation with his counterpart Rex Tillerson over the planned meeting, Çavuşoğlu indicated that President Erdoğan gave his views on the developments in Syria to Trump during a phone call on Monday, in which Trump called Erdoğan to congratulate him on the referendum results.

Highlighting the necessity of not neglecting a political solution while struggling with Daesh, Çavuşoğlu said that they reminded him about the importance of acting alongside the "right" groups, notably in the Raqqa Operation.

Meanwhile, CNN reported that Erdoğan was the one who suggested the meeting to Trump during their telephone conversation.

"It would be better to have a face-to-face meeting and take our relationship forward," Erdoğan reportedly said.

Meanwhile, Trump highlighted in the phone call that he values Turkey's friendship and cooperation. Diplomatic sources said that the two leaders had a "pleasant" call that lasted 45 minutes. According to the same sources, Trump also congratulated President Erdoğan on his "strong leadership."
