De-escalation in Syria to be on Erdoğan's agenda during Kuwait visit
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan will visit Kuwait today, where he is scheduled to meet with Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah and hold a tête-à-tête meeting. According to the Turkish Presidency's press center, bilateral and regional matters as well as Turkey's cooperation within the framework of the Gulf Cooperation Council will be discussed during the meeting between President Erdoğan and Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah.
President Erdoğan's visit to Kuwait comes after a critical meeting in Sochi with his Russian counterpart President Vladimir Putin last week, when the two leaders announced that they had agreed on establishing a "de-escalation" zone in Syria. Thus, implying that Kuwait could become one of the largest humanitarian donors in the scope of the Syrian crisis after the numerous humanitarian donation conferences the country has hosted since the Syrian civil war began. The meeting also indicates that the financing of a "de-escalation zone" in Syria is expected to be brought to the agenda during the meetings in Kuwait.
Erdoğan's visit to Kuwait comes after Emir Sheikh Sabah paid an official visit to Ankara on March 21 when three agreements regarding Kuwaiti financial aid were signed with three municipalities located in Turkey's southeastern provinces of Kilis, Şanlıurfa, and Gaziantep. Three other deals covering military, Islamic and tourism-related cooperative efforts were also agreed upon. In the scope of a memorandum of understanding on religious affairs forged between the two countries, Turkey and Kuwait have decided to cooperate on issues of communicating Islam in various forms. For this goal, the two countries will publish material, prepare programs, and seminars and conferences, while also engaging in the exchange of information and experience. The two states will also cooperate in guiding young people and warning them of the dangers of involvement in violent initiatives.
Having established diplomatic relations in 1970, Kuwait and Turkey have a diplomatic relationship based on mutual respect and common interests that has evolved from friendship to formal partnership. President Erdoğan's visit is expected to contribute to the further enhancement of bilateral relations, which have been described by the Turkish Presidency as being at an "excellent" level.
Apart from the bilateral meeting during the president's visit to Kuwait, he will also be participating in the groundbreaking ceremony of a Turkish company constructing a new main terminal at Kuwait International Airport.
