Turkish side ready for next round of Cyprus reunification talks

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus President Mustafa Akıncı stated Tuesday that the Turkish side is ready for the next round of Cyprus reunification talks without any pre-conditions and with the approval of each side.

President Akıncı, in a written statement, indicated that since the day he took the office some two years ago, serious progress has been made in the negotiations and the Turkish side's constructive attitude has played a major role in it.

Despite the constructive attitude and effort by the Turkish side, however, there was no way of coming up with a reconciliation unless past disagreements on issues like administration, the share of power, economy and the EU, were cleared off, Akıncı said.

He also pointed to the Greek side's difficulty in accepting the political equality of the Turkish side, in the case of a federal solution.

Stating that the Turkish side is ready to be present at the next round of the conference without any pre-condition, Akıncı said that the Greek side's offer of handling some critical issues first and then move to the other subjects is not result-oriented.

"Our expectation from the Greek side is to leave the preconditions aside and show that they are ready to take the steps that will lead us to peace," he added.

Akıncı and the Greek-Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades met at the U.N. buffer zone in Cyprus last week, under the framework of reunification talks of the long-divided island.

The ongoing talks had experienced a two-month hiatus after a decision by the Greek Cypriot assembly to introduce a school commemoration of the 1950 Enosis referendum on unification with Greece.

The reunification talks, brokered by the United Nations Special Envoy for Cyprus Espen Barth Eide, were launched in May 2015 to discuss a permanent settlement for the divided Mediterranean island.
