Uzbekistan, Turkey revive ties as presidents meet after 20 years

Two Turkic countries, Uzbekistan and Turkey have taken a step to revive ties as Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev paid an official visit to Ankara on Wednesday. This meeting has been the first presidential visit between the two countries in 20 years.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, speaking at a press conference with his Uzbek counterpart, said he was deeply honored to meet "dear brother" Mirziyoyev and urged a boost in trade ties and revival of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The significance of the visit was highlighted in a press release from the presidency that said: "As this presidential visit from Uzbekistan to Turkey after nearly 20 years has historical significance, it will contribute to the cooperation between the two friendly and brotherly countries in all fields, specifically in economic and cultural areas."

During his visit, Mirziyoyev is expected to visit Parliament and hold a meeting with the speaker, İsmail Kahraman.
