The Turkish Foreign Ministry issued a statement late Sunday congratulating Iraq for its victory over Daesh and extending condolences for the country's citizens who lost their lives in the fight against the terrorist group.

"We welcome that Iraq's fight against Daesh has been successfully brought to an end and we congratulate the Iraqi government," the statement said.

On Saturday, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced that the war against Daesh was over and that Iraqi forces are now in full control of Iraq's border with Syria.

"I break the good news to all Iraqis that the Iraqi people have completed purging the Jazeera region from Daesh and have complete control of the border with Syria," al-Abadi said adding that victory was realized with unity among Iraqis.

Meanwhile, the Turkish Foreign Ministry statement added, "It is our assessment that decisive steps have to be taken to reconstruct the liberated areas, strengthen the capacity of Iraqi institutions and establish national conciliation among our Iraqi sisters and brothers in the upcoming period. It is important to carry out these efforts with an inclusive approach that embraces all segments of Iraqi society."

Turkey will continue to work in solidarity with the Iraqi government in post-Daesh period like in the period of anti-Daesh fight, it added.

Daesh overran nearly a third of Iraqi territory, including Mosul, the country's second largest city and Tikrit, the capital of Iraq's central Salahaddin province in the summer of 2014. The following year, Daesh terrorists also overran Anbar's provincial capital of Ramadi.

Over the past three-and-a-half years, Iraqi ground forces closely backed by the U.S.-led coalition and mostly Shiite paramilitary forces backed by Iran have slowly retaken all of that territory.
